Default Why do....

.... freakin batteries always pick the best days to crap out on?!?!?!? [sm=badbadbad.gif][sm=boosign.gif][sm=headbang.gif]

[BEGIN RANT]

So it was a beautiful day today.... high of 69* and not a cloud in the sky. I had planned to take a nice long all day ride with my buddy Joe (rides an '03 VFR800) and head up to Tennessee and across the Cherohala Skyway today, which is absolutely breathtaking this time of year with all the leaves changing. I've been excited all week, as I haven't been up there for months and months. So I get up early this morning, leave the house about 7:30 to go meet my buddy. It was in the 40's when I left so I turned the grip heaters on and headed down the road. About 15 miles down the road I pull into a QT to fill up with gas. Oddly enough when I pull up to the pump, I hear "Hey Jared!"... I look over and one of my co-workers Bob is at the pump next to me filling up his F-350, hahaha. Anyways, I fill up, go to leave and the bike turns over 1 time and then just dies. FAK!! Got it bump started though and it started right up and ran fine, so just headed home to get it figured out. Did some testing.... stator OHM'd out perfect, rec/reg seems to be working fine, so I went to cycle gear and got a new battery. Seems to be A-OK now... charging at 14.1-14.4v consistently, so that's good at least, and I went and put about 150 miles on it and still starting up perfectly, so hopefully that's all it was. Oh well at least I didn't get stranded anywhere..... just bummed I didn't get to go though. Couldn't have crapped out on me on my 5 mile ride to work, where I could just come back and get the car, lol.

Oh well just had to rant for a bit, that's all. I feel better now
[/END RANT]

The guy at Cycle Gear said Hondas typically eat batteries pretty bad.... I dunno this is only the 2nd time replacing it in my bike. Original lasted 80k. This current one got pretty hot a couple months ago though... poor connection on the voltage regulator caused a massive overcharge, and the battery got VERY hot (whistled a tune for about 30 minutes after we stopped.... no idea how long it was whistling before we stopped, lol). The corner of it was even melted a little bit, so I guess I can't complain this one died.

Oh well, maybe it was for the better anyways.... there was a pretty bad fatality up in the mountains today (bike vs car) on one of the roads (exact spot) I regularly pass through. Who knows....

Default RE: Why do....

HONDA CHARGING SYSTEMS SUCK!!!!!

I replaced the stator and regulator with unit I got from aplace called regulatorrecifier.com.....280 bucks delivered (thanks again Chain) it runs like a different bike. highly recommend doing this if you have ever had any charging issues with your Honda. my 1000 is less than a year old and the dealer has replaced the stator twice already and I still thought something was a miss......the cold start fast idle works now...the idle is rock stable(no more galloping), the severe popping on decel is gone. the overly rich stink at low RPM is gone. roll on is way more stable and smooth now.

apparently the Honda systems are like bearly able to keep up.....and the bike struggles to run correctly....I know many of you complain about the rich running of your bike. this will most likely cure it. now I feel comfortable taking it to be dyno tuned. knowing it is running correctly now....

thanks again to chains advice and knowledge

Yeah I had to do the same thing, mine died from lack of use (sad eh! been a bad few months). Since the bike was due for rego check (inspection), went out & got a new Yuasa. Had my reg replaced ages ago & can recommend that highly to.
