I guess that depends on the business and industry. You can start a business on the side for relatively nothing, but of course, that is depending on the industry.

What is the 'ton of work'? The website, or the business itself?

what kind of company are you planning to start? Yes, entrepreneurship is hard work, you need to calculate all details, do your research and analyze the needs and the competition in the market and put some extra money on the side for the risky start up period which is around 3 to 6 months. And then marketing needs of the company is another level that should be considered. Did you already write down your business plan? If you like to discuss I would be happy to exchange information.

ton of work = research / putting together business plan / website / technical issues with the web site / researching the industry I'm going to be jumping into

I did about 7 years ago. It took me a lot longer then 3-6 months to have work everyday. Totally different kind of business though, nothing to do with the internet.

If you go through with it just be prepared to make it your life. Make sure you enjoy what your doing, first and foremost.

The only advice I can give you is make sure you have enough work, before you make it your only work.

I did, over eight years ago. But nothing to do with .com, and I already was pretty well known in the local industry, so I was confident I could attract work.

There have been some struggles, but overall it's worked out. I think some people have a real entrepreneurial spirit, and couldn't stand working for someone else. Others just want to do what they're good at, and leave the business side of things to others. I'm in the middle and could have gone either way. But one of the best things is the feeling of knowing that I was able to pull it off, attract clients, and keep things up and running.

I say go for it. If you're good at what you do, you'll always be marketable, so if this thing goes up in smoke you just get a job doing what you were doing before.
