What's your heritage/ancestry?

I was just wondering something; I live and work in the Netherlands in an American company so there are a lot of 'first generation' foreigners here (Chinese, Moroccan, Polish, Slovakian, Brazilian, English, Russian, Indonesian etc. Mostly native speakers who ended up in the NL for whatever reason).

I also live in a city with a lot of different nationalities and was just wondering something. What is your heritage/ancestry? I'm Mexican/British (mother/father). Even if you are 2nd, 3rd, 4th gen, I'm interested in hearing where you all come from (or where your ancestors come from).

White American - that's the only heritage I care about. Both sides of my family have been here since the 1500's so that is good enough for me.

Xander F4i 06-09-2011 09:24 AM

A little bit of just about everything that could be mixed and still come up white american

pittsm 06-09-2011 09:27 AM

cynicalrider 06-09-2011 09:42 AM

My mom came from Poland when she was 6 and my Dad came from Poland when he was 18. Does that make me first or second gen here? haha

I find that very interesting too, because you are more likely to be able to trace back your heritage where since my parents come from a different country, we can probably only go one or two generations back.

kilgoretrout 06-09-2011 02:21 PM

My dad's side is mixed up pretty good. English, irish, scottish, german, french, etc. My mom's side is much more german with a little scottish mixed in from her mom.

I'm Portuguese and German and 100% Awesome :icon_pimp:

Really?

It's a long running joke since it's immaterial now. But "legally" Texas may still be an independent country as it's population never voted to join the Confederate States of America. And therefore wasn't technically in "revolt" to fall under the terms offered the Confederacy when it lost the civil war.

Doesn't really matter. We do enough weird chit most people would be willing to disown us if it weren't for the oil and the Cowboys :D

Texas was a country before the USA was and that is why it is the only state that can fly its state flag even with the US flag. It upsets others so it stays below with the rest.

My mom's side --grandfather-Rome Italy
--grandmother-Naples Italy

My father side--grandfather-born in US but his father Netherlands
--grandmother-Island Of Man

My ex-wife's --both sides grandparents Scottish

My kids-------all the above

English/Welsh/Irish/French & found out recently that great, great grandmother may have been part aboriginal. My niece has been checking out the family ancestry & thinks this could be the case. They weren't exactly big on paper work back then & it was also the kind of thing that they kept quite about. Strange, as family where 1st fleeter's & we all most likely descended from stock that were transported here for some crime or other.

Kevwa451 06-11-2011 09:38 PM

Moms side - Sicilian, Dads side - German and Welsh

scorpionvmu 06-11-2011 09:57 PM

thats a good question.

i think, since you were born in the states, that makes you second generation even that you are 100% polish. if you look at it that way.
but some polish people that come here become citizens and renounce their polish citizenship, but that dont make them 2nd generation so it is debatable. :icon_shrug:

i think you would have to ask someone who knows about these things.

ko67 06-11-2011 10:58 PM

When I was over in Korea I was always referred to as a "2nd generation Korean" (direct translation) and those who naturalized to another country were known as "1.5 generation". Might just be a Korean thing.

Yeah 2nd generation just seems to make more sense. Both of my parents still have their Polish citizenship. My grandpa was going to leave about 3 acres of property to my dad but he didn't want to pay taxes on it. I wanted to see if I could get it since he didn't want it but in order for me to get it I would need to become a Polish citizen and learn to read/write in polish. I told my grandpa to give it to my cousin who is still living in Poland who is only 4. :P
