Today riding, I was wondering if there is any law about rapid acceleration of vehicles?

Is there any law (in any state) says you can't accelerate 0-60 in 3 seconds?

 

IDK, but I often wonder when I look back after taking off from a red light and the cars that were stopped with me are now tiny specs in the mirror..... I'm not speeding, I just got to the limit....really...quick!!!

I think it would depend on the interpretation of the officer. Wheelies are charged as an accessive display of power in some states, wreckless driving in others. Try not to overdo it, and you will be fine.

 

I really don't know the answer... riding home today I was trying to test the response of the bike at certain speeds on different gears... then cruising home this question popped up

what does that law say specifically? do you know? I found couple posts on the web, they say it's ok as long as you don't pull wheelies or do burnouts etc. Just curious

 

It can be viewed as "drag racing". The officer (unless sees you from the start) doesnt know if you're speeding up "to speed" or just to "get up to speed". Its more of how you get up to speed that will decide if the cop will pull you over.


If you're entering a road (say 50 mph) from a driveway, then I'd say its ok, AS long as you're not being stupid.

Now if you're at a stop sign or red light and you take off fast then a cop can easily pull you over for over accelerating.

 

my uncle is a cop, he says there is no such thing as an acceleration limit, you can accelerate as fast as you want. However, as already mentioned, burn outs, wheelies, racing and etc are illegal and to be honest he told me that if they just want to **** with you for accelerating too fast they can say you were racing the person next to you or behind you and give you a wreckless operation, so just take it easy around the police, most the time they are cool but better safe than sorry.
