Have a wreck without one and you will wish you were wearing one.. I always where a helmet ..even on my race four wheeler..and Illinois doesn't even require riders to wear one..

if you take the liner n cheek pads out n wash em they'll loose that fit-in shape.

I washed and then used the one i got with my bike till i got one that i liked. It fit and was broke in already. I liked it but i wanted my own. I don't see the harm unless its got some roadrash already on it.

I'd try to only get a used helmet from someone you know / trust. Even a helmet that has been dropped from hip height can severely reduce its protective capabilities. The inside has kind of like a crumple zone of a car (not really, but a decent-enough analogy). Once it breaks, it's not gonna work that well.

That said, do what PlayfulGod said and just take out the inside parts and wash them.

Maybe it is just me, but I would have a hard time sticking my head in a helmet that some other guy had been sweating, breathing in and wearing....

For around 100 bucks you can get a nice helmet. BUT if you can't swing the extra $ right now then definitely wear the one that came with it.

Kudos to those who wear them even when the law says you don't have to. I think it is CRAZY to not put one on. There are countless benefits and no negatives.....
