I once had a guy with a tow truck sit in front of my house and start looking in the windows of my Trans Am (parked in my driveway). Now... I paid cash for the thing, I've never had a loan. It's a $4k car. I walked out to the driveway with a loaded AK-47 and asked him if I could help him. He said he was looking for a car that he was supposed to repo, I asked for the name and license plate number of the car, his name and who he worked for, he didn't have any answers for me, and he promptly left. I got the plate number of the tow truck and called it into the police. I think the guy was going around stealing cars.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I live in a town of like 4,000 people on the outskirts of town in a small airport subdivision. There might be 3 firebirds in the whole town. It's not like I was in the city or something where it could have been a simple mistake.

even if the vin # is off by 1 digit they cant touch the car.
if it is behind a locked gate or in a garage they cant touch it.
if its on an indian reservation they cant touch it.
if you call the cops before they have it hooked up most of the times the cops will tell them to drop it but that is up to the discretion of the police officer. he could also tell you to just let him have it but honestly most cops wont want to get involved.
