Nerds are basically book worms learn everything they can in any subject. Go to college, etc.
Geeks tend to specialize their learning in finite interests. Computers, cars, photography, legos, dice with more than 6 sides. They sink a lot of time into that one field. Types that fall asleep at their keyboards.

I was taught binary in college and again in training for my AF job. All of which I do not remember.

Transistors are basically glorified light switches with 2 states. Off (0) and On (1). If you have a bank of 4 light switches, you have 4-bits there are 16 different combinations which are used to represent the numbers 0 - 15.

(NOTE: bits are read from right to left)

0 0 0 0 - 0
0 0 0 1 - 1 first bit
0 0 1 0 - 2 second bit
0 0 1 1 - 3
0 1 0 0 - 4 third bit
0 1 0 1 - 5
0 1 1 0 - 6
0 1 1 1 - 7
1 0 0 0 - 8 four bit
1 0 0 1 - 9
1 0 1 0 - 10
1 0 1 1 - 11
1 1 0 0 - 12
1 1 0 1 - 13
1 1 1 0 - 14
1 1 1 1 - 15

Notice
- The first bit is the equivalent of 1
- The second bit is the equivalent of 2
- The third bit is the equivalent of 4
- The forth bit is the equivalent of 8

if bit 2 and bit 3 are turned on, then this is the equal to 6.
