Submitted the age old question to Mythbusters...
I've got D&D (loudest exhaust known to man), a flapper mod (made bike louder), a freakin Orange and Red bike (not audibly loud, but comically loud) and I was riding at 2:00 PM this afternoon going 85 down the highway alongside a girl in a civic (not on her phone I noticed) and she came right on over into my lane...the bike and I got away unscathed but I can say firsthand that loud pipes do not guarantee anything...
If anything it might get the plausible rating if the driver has their windows down or is particuarly sensitive to the frequency of the exhaust note.

BUSTED
It is a myth. Chances are, it is only other motorcyclists that "hear" loud pipes...everyone else in their cages just get annoyed and start looking around for the source of their annoyment, thus veering and/or swerving anyway. There is no such thing as anything that saves lives except defensive riding skill, IMO.

One thing is for sure, after reading their forum, I've got a headache from the color scheme.
Oh, I've got a Scorpion slip-on and I don't expect ANYONE to hear/see me ... ever.
This is how all bikers should ride.

Pipes make a difference around deer country. They pop up and start moving before ya get to them whereas with the sewing machine can ya startle them as you pass. Makes no difference at all to rabbits[:@]
I passed one of those large construction signs (used to warn you of traffic conditions and hazards) as I was heading to Newark, DE to watch "The Dark Knight" this morning. The warning:
"Loud Muffler check point at..."
