After I read a pretty convincing thread about the lower octane being just fine, I decided that I would switch. A few other guys said they were running lower octane and noticed no difference at all. Someone also said "If you notice a performance difference, then there is something else wrong with your bike that you need to address with something other than higher octane gasoline."

Well, I ran about 3 tanks of 87 Octane in my 1996 F3 before I went right back to 93. The bike was not accelerating the same, sounded a good deal different, popping and such out of the exhaust. I can't site a ton of references or argue my point in court with an essay. But I know that my poor effie was pissed at me for putting that lower grade gasoline in her. The engine was knocking like an sv650 and I was quickly dissuaded from using the 87. After putting a tank of 93 back in it, the performance and everything returned to what I had come to know and love as normal. No knocking, no popping, and a smoother ride.

Does this mean there is something wrong with my bike? I wouldn't think so, but I'm not a mechanic. The previous owner (My older brother, got it new) only ran 93 in it the whole time he had it.

OK, I GOT ONE. ONE DAY I WAS ON THE FREEWAY HEADING HOME WHEN I LOOKED IN MY MIRROR AND SAW THIS BIKE FLYING UP BEHIND ME. THEN I LOOKED OVER TO MY RIGHT AND WATCHED HIM CROSS THREE LANES, RIGHT BETWEEN SOME CARS, AND PROCEED TO DO 110 DOWN THE ROAD. BUT I GUESS ITS ALRIGHT BECAUSE BY LOOKS OF HIS GEAR HE WAS LATE TO BASKET BALL GAME (NYLON JERSEY AND SHORTS, NO GLOVES, AND SOME AIR JORDANS. WELL MAYBE NOT JORDANS).[sm=lame.gif]

yo...there are always exceptions...and that's why the post stated to use lowest and move up from there.

for older bikes, using what was originally recommended may causing pinging as the bike ages for many reason, but most common is carbon build up within the cylinders, which make the temps hotter than it should be. so running 87 may cause pinging..so move up to the next one...and so forth...but if the bike was meant to run on 87 and you remove the build up, you'd be back to running 87.

Once, I was riding with saddles on. I went into a 25mph curve a little too fast, leaned over and my left saddle scraps the road and rips off. The saddle flies backwards and hits the car behind me, which happens to be my friend. Lesson learned... don't wear saddles when riding...
