so really how likely is death on a bike?
I hear that too. I just tell em to get back in their prius and head to starbucks cause i don't wanna talk to you. yeah riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than driving a car but I could fall off the toilet and hit my head on the bath tub and die so how bout I have some fun with the short time I have here.
Well, I drive my cars 25,000-30,000 more miles in ayear than my bike, so I'm at .004% greater of dieingon my bike than my car. That is 4 one thousandths of a percent. I'll take my chances.
By those numbers, you would have to drive over 2 million miles to increase your chances of dieing by 1%. I'd like to meet the person that put 2 million on a bike. If all I drove was a bike, it would take 57 years to do that.
I saw in the nsc stats that you are abot as likely to die in a SUV/Pickup as a bike.

Stop thinking and start riding, or you will die of boredom instead

and i'll add that i'd rather die on my F4i than rot in a retirement home. (that attitude may change if i ever have children but for right now i'm 25 and have a live in gf and no kids so i stick to it)
The endless litany you get from non-riders is amazing. If I had a dollar for eveytime I was told I would die, I'd be loaded! It is totally up to you. The more you do to be safe (gear, ride within limitations, SIPDE, MSF, ect), the better shot you have.
like its been said before, its not how well youride, how many years you've ridden,or how much gear you have on (although gear does help, i know from experience) but its about the drivers around you...i personally believe that everytimei get on my bike, its a risk that i know im taking, am willing to take, and accept as a part of my passion...
just as everyone has already said....ride like no one out there can see you. i think i do a damn good job of making myself seen and have few close calls w/ cars. just be safe out there...that goes w/o saying i guess.
i've have my bike for one year, this month. so far i have racked up 23k miles and i rode it year 'round. i was out in rain, sleet, snow, ice, frigid single digit temps, high winds (on bridges at that)...........its all about how well you pay attention to your surroundings, and how well you MAKE your surroundings notice you.
be seen, be seen.....be seen!
i had the same negative comments from everyone i know, too. it slowly goes away. hell, i think my mother actually kinda thinks the bike is "cool" now, lol. they get over it. hell, it might even be a jealousy thing
.
just pay attention and be safe out there, friend.

if you ride like a idiot, ie stunt in traffic, which includes running 100+, wheelies, stoppies ,etc, yes your chance are very good of dying soon in a bike crash.
If you dont wear gear, think it wont happen to you, think you are too good to crash, think you will never drop your bike, you chances of dying are very good.
If you start on a 1k you chances of dying are very good.
now if you ride like you have a little sense, wear you gear, watch wtf others are doing, cages n other bikers alike, learn all you can every time you ride, always remember all it takes is a split second for everything to goto hell, then you may be ok, or at least live to ride another day.
