Default So I was going through my old wallet tonight...

...And now I feel like a total dumbass

I found a check still all folded up, dated 11/20/03... for $760.04, that I had never cashed[:-] It was my 401(k) payout from when I quit wally world back in July '03 (hey it was my first job, hahah). I know for a fact I was broke as hell at that particular time being that I was in school, so I really don't know how the f**k I could have possibly forgot to deposit it into my account... DOH! Oh well, live and learn....

Lucky bastard, the only things I ever find in my wallet are the withdrawal slips from the ATM's telling me how much money I used to have. Although I did find 5c in the park the other day.
You must have so much money not to have even missed the check.

That check was shot 90 days after issued. Do get in touch with Merrill Lynch and see if they can find your money. If they still have it see if they can roll it into a Roth IRA for you. Cashing a distribution means that 20% goes away in penaltiesand you get taxed on 100% of all of it.

Still, good find! I never find anything worth a darn in my wallet. Of course I never put anything much in my wallet ... have awife and kids don't cha know ...

In fact, that money isn't gone. They can't do anything with it because it is still yours. The only way that money would be gone is if that company is dead broke. Well, Merril Lynch is having some money problems, so you better act fast.

Usually for the company to re-issue another check, you will lose some due to a company having to cancel the check and re-issue (although the check is expired, it is the same principle). I would definitely try to have it put into another form of retirement savings account to avoid the tax penalties, unless it doesn't matter to you (or unless you need the money).

Good-luck!
