DD uses Oster A5 for grooming Jasmine (standard poodle) She has a #10 and a #4fine for the mass work. Then a curved shear and 2 straight (1 is 3"-ish the other about a 5") for the detail work.

Might need to stop and re-oil your cutters if they are getting too hot. She always bathes her first with a combo shampoo/conditioner. (she says dirty fur dulls the blades faster) The blades have to be SHARP to make any headway on Jazzie's fur.

Here is the oster dog forums, probably a better source than a bunch of 20-something twisted-wristers.

Don't forget to take frequent breaks and LOTS of treats (give the dog some treats and breaks, too.)

Good luck and remember ...if ya butcher the cut, it'll grow back and you probably won't have to put up with any more grooming requests (and the dog will probably forgive the embarressment, eventually, too).

Oh, and be careful shaving the muzzle. DD does it first (before they heat up) to avoid burning sensitive skin.

They have grooming table and leash with suction cup for only grooming purpose. Shih Tzu needs to be combed. Brushing only gets the top layer and the hair can still get matted. There is a mat breaking brush that will cut the mat out. I think you need to do that before you can cut their hair. Matted hair can be painful for them.....

Wow what a pain.........

Good advice though guys.. thanks.

I wonder how experienced groomers get experienced.... Last time I checked there wasn't dog grooming school. Maybe some sort of certification though??

Well, you would have to know each breed, how they should look in show ring. Some breeds, you "pluck" their coat, some breeds need to have their ear hair pulls too. You also have to do their **** gland and nail

I don't think you need certification though.

some grooming places pay 8 an hour...fail...

I used to have a shih tzu, they have an under coat, and that is what gets tangled.

pretty much shave or, brush is your only alternatives, theres a product i think is called called Show Sheen that is used on show horses that may help undo some knots.
