It was a beautiful day (at least until early afternoon), so I went on a ride up the canyon. Here's the itinerary:

Start at my house in Provo
US 189 up Provo Canyon
Squaw Peak Road up to trail head and back (pics of valley)
Continue up US 189
Turn on UT 92 aka Alpine Loop (this is where Sundance is, for those of you who have heard of it)
Turn onto Deer Creek scenic byway and back (not sure exactly where on the map)
Continue Alpine Loop
Return home via UT 146 and US 89

 

The five pictures above are all from the Squaw Peak trail head looking over the valley.

The first picture below is Cascade mountain on the opposite side of the trail head from the valley.

The 2nd and 3rd are the road up to the trail head.

The 4th is US 189 heading up Provo Canyon as seen from Squaw Peak Road.

The 5th is just up the road from Sundance Resort along UT 92.

 

First picture is just a little ways further up the road from #5 above.

Pictures 2-5 are from an outlook on the Deer Creek Scenic Byway. I didn't know that road existed, and I'm not exactly sure where it is and how it connects to the adjacent valley.

The back side of the loop definitely isn't good for working the twisties at all. The road is narrow (just wide enough for two cars to scrape past) and not very level. It's not really bumpy or rough, but lots of up and down. The rest of it's nice through.

 

Forgot I meant to post this map, too. The ride took me about 2 1/2 hours total.

I did that loop the first time back in the early nineties and we caught up with some dude on a yellow Ducati ... dry clutch and everything. I mean this was like '92, and in Utah, a Ducati might as well have been a Ferrari. Turns out it was Richard Losee, who, of course, owns several actual Ferraris. I don't think he rides much anymore now ...

The temperature was perfect at until some clouds started blowing it. Even then, it was still tolerable.

Ah, good ol' Richard Losee. I've seen him around town in various Ferraris (550 Maranello Berlinetta, Enzo, etc). Haven't seen him in a while. His family businesses were just sold off, so maybe he can't afford the playboy lifestyle anymore.

That's a small number for a twisties sign around here.
