if i "obtain" photoshop online. what is the best way to learn how to use it? my experience so far is MS Paint lol.

Google "photoshop tutorials" and you'll get about a zillion hits. There are some incredible resources out there.

7.0 is when the brush engine really matured, there are other advancements in the CS versions but the brushes make it for me.

Spend some time surfing the tutorials. They are amazingly helpful. I'll see if I can find one I did that was a walk through on doing a totally realistic planet with atmosphere and a beautiful starfield.
