The stock item is a one size fits all design made for people who only want to know where the petrol cap is. Failure of the stock CCT is not uncommon and a noisy cam chain could be caused by a failed CCT and not the chain. Have a look at replacing the stock item with a manual one before you replace the timing chain. The manual ones are bullet proof plus they are really easy to fit and adjust. Even if it turns out not to be the CCT then the manual ones are a good investment anyway. There are a few threads on the forums about the evils of the stock CCT's vs manual items and quite a lot of info on the net on how to fit/adjust them.
