Gotta try, man. Take him to lunch one day or something and get to talking. Tell him about your experiences, other people's experiences, and how much one mistake can hurt. I'm crossing my fingers he doesn't kill himself. Do your best and hope he sees the light.

Its cool to talk about safety if he wants to. You don't want to come across like your pushing him into "your not right for this bike" lecture, it will only make him go away. I say go for a ride with him screw lunch and see how he does.

yeah you wanna stay away from the "your not ready to handle this bike" lecture and go with the "safety" lecture.....ease into things and maybe he's cool, and you have a new riding buddy?

Yea ya know im sure he froze his kibbles off but he was just like the rest of us were when we got our first bike..especially if it was new...ya just look for reasons to ride it but 12 degrees with wind chill....owwwch...the tires on my 1K were slippery noodles at 80 degrees for at least 20 miles...im sure he will be fine.

Thanks guys for the responses

Anyways, he rode the bike to work again today, and I was able to talk with him for a few minutes at the end of the day as he was leaving. He had the basic gear... gloves, jacket, helmet, ect. In all honesty from what I can tell, I think he'll be just fine. He's most definitely not the "I know everything and nobodys gonna tell me what to do..." type... not at all. Like I said earlier, he's a good kid.... not a macho man type, he's actually rather shy and quiet like myself (which is a good thing cuz that means more than likely he's not gonna be a dumbass and try to show off to everyone). I mentioned straight up that a Gix 750 was alot of bike for a n00b, and he didn't argue or get defensive about it, he said "yea you're probably right". He assured me that he was taking it real slow and easy, and had no plans on doing anything crazy with it. Of course anybody can say anything, but just from the way I know him, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I did watch him pull out of the parking lot and take off down the street, and he indeed took off real slow and easy. He asked me when we'd be able to go riding together, since he doesn't really know anybody else that rides other than me. So once he gets his license we're gonna go riding around here... not up in the mountains just yet but there's plenty of backroads around this area that are nice easy roads. I'm gonna help get him signed up in an MSF class too.... he wasn't even sure what it was or where, so I'll help him out with that so he's legal and educated ASAP.

I'm not gonna lecture him or try and shove anything down his throat. He already knows my thought on his choice for a 1st bike, so I'll leave that alone... what's done is done there. I know I HATE being lectured, and usually don't listen anyways when I am, so I'm not gonna do that to somebody else. But I'll still take him out to lunch sometime and give him a rundown on some street smarts and pointers, just to make sure his head is on straight. He seems very open minded to advice and the like, so I think he'll listen

I don't have alot of room to talk on alot of stuff, because when I first started riding I did alot of stupid s**t myself. I didn't realize it at the time just because I was young and stupid, and it was all new to me and I really just didn't know any better. First off, I too bought a brand new bike for my first.... never ridden before. When I first started riding, I rode for 2 weeks before taking the MSF (no license... and didn't actually go to the DMV to get the endorsement until a couple months later, after getting pulled over for 90 in a 65 and almost going to jail). I didn't have a jacket or gloves, just helmet and jeans. I also rode ALOT faster than I do now. We'd go out every weekend in the everglades and just run wide open for miles and miles and miles and miles. Just cruising along holding the throttle open as far as it would go, speedo showing 162 indicated, and we'd roll for probably 15-20 min at a time like that, then slow down for a few mins, then back up to speed. Now a couple years, alot more miles, and a few friends accidents and funerals later, I realize just how stupid I was for doing some of the stuff I did. I'm lucky nothing ever happened to me, and that I was able to learn something from it all. I've watched alot of accidents happen in front of me, one of which later ended up being a semi-fatality. All I really want to do is try and keep this kid from making some of the same stupid n00b mistakes that I made when I was in his shoes. Others might not have the same good luck that I did, and I just don't want to see him get hurt, or worse... that's all

I hope he won't be a statistic, maybe just remind him how tires really need to warm up before they start working.
