I wanted to clean-up my tool box. I have an idea that I am in the process of testing out, but I thought I would share and see if you think it will work or not.

In short, use that spray foam stuff to create a 3d shadow-board (I am not sure if there is a technical name for it). Here is what I have done so far on my trial run:

Lined up the screwdrivers and gave them a nice, heavy spray coat of some non-stick cooking oil



Then I added the expanding foam:



Then I placed some plastic wrap on top and leved out the foam with a "roller"



I am going to let it dry over night and see if I can cut it and use it as a shadow-board or not.

Do you think it will work? (Either way, I will find out tomorrow and post pics of my success or failure)

 

What a groovy idea. My guess would be that success or failure totally depends on the kind of foam. A hard, resilient type that can withstand pull-out's and push-in's (ha!) would be ideal, especially if I could paint the whole project black and hang it on the wall...hmmm...must look into this

 

The foam is going to surround all the drivers.

You will need an electric knife (like cutting the turkey with) to shave off 1/2" or so to get the depth right for the larger drivers but you may end up cutting out the smaller drivers all together.

You would of been better off filling the drawer first like the last pic, put the plastic on top and press the drivers into place and let it set that way.

 

Cool idea, but what if you buy a new screwdriver ?

 

Those are Stanleys they will last foreveror is it craftsman?

 

Pretty good idea. i was thinking if you used that "tuff stuff" i THINK its called but its that insulation foam that dries immediately....ooooohhhhh immediate results would be great! i was thinking of doing the same thing but i was going to get two sheets of foam from like the fabric store thats like a sponge about a half inch thick lay one down and then on the other trace out my tools and make the cuts...if that makes any sense. I think your way is better though it will handle grease and oil much better.

 

I think it might work, but I don't know if you'll want to keep it like that. Seems like it might crumble and whatnot once it gets a little age on it. But what do I know. I just have foam mats lining all of the drawers of my toolbox and that works fine for me.

Those are stanley screwdrivers. I use Craftsman almost exclusively, which works great for the majority of tools, but some just aren't quite there. I have full sets of GearWrenches, and for other things I'd like to have Snap-On, but can't quite afford those yet.

Well, I guess I should have waited until tonight. Apparently, overnight wasn't enough time for the "DAP" stuff to dry:


I am not giving up though. I am trying a different brand that I happen to have in the garage and I am going to do this one in two parts. This brand said triple expanding, so that might be an issue. But here's what I am doing right now:


If this fails, then I am going to use RCR's suggestion.

I will have to look into that "tuff stuff" because I am not good at waiting. I also like CBR13f2's idea with 2 layers of foam. I might do that if I can't get this idea to work or if is just doesn't hold up like elmer mentioned.

Stanley is about the best name brand I have in my toolbox right now. I can't afford to upgrade yet.
