My experience at the MSF BRC
I took the MSF BRC this past weekend at a local community college. The fee was $220 which I thought was kinda steep, but I guess in the end it was worth it. There were 11 other people in my class, and we had 2 instructors. We watched the videos and answered all the questions in the manual the first few hours of each day. The rest of the time we were out on the range riding in the rain. The bikes were really small cruisers (I rode a Suzuki GZ250). The first day of riding was basic stuff like starting the bike and stopping normally. We worked a little bit on curves and stuff. The second day was harder... we did emergency stopping, swerving, and figure 8's in a small box. The riding evaluation consisted of 4 parts: A figure 8 in a box, a swerve around an obstacle, an emergency stop, and 2 cornering moves. Overall, I learned a lot and now am a better rider. I recommend everyone take the course if you can. I passed and can now get my license without hassle. It was fun too and you get to meet some interesting people. It was especially amusing to see 2 really big guys (both over 6 ft and over 300 lbs) riding those little bikes.
I took the MSF course too, and I learned a tremendous amount that I use on the street every time I ride. I think that everyone should take the MSF course in order to get a solid foundation for riding. Before taking the course I thought that I was pretty decent at riding, but while taking it, I quickly realized that I knew nothing about real world riding. By the way TennesseCBR where are you from? Tennessee?
wow! the one up here in ohio is 25 bucks... well, now it's 75, but I had a GZ250 too. I almost bought one as an around town bike because it gets 80 MPG, but everyone i've talked to said it has trouble on the highway SUSTAINING 65 MPH
I'm in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Living here is pretty cheap. Average income is only about $30K. In one of the riding books I have read said that the MSF course was $50-$400. I figured since I lived in a poorer part of the country that it would be on the cheap end. But it is a VERY popular course here. They have one almost every weekend, and they are always full with people on stand-by. I signed up in early August, and September 23-24 was the earliest class open. The closest place that offers the course is Knoxville (hour and a half away), so maybe that has something to do with it.
Glad I took mine! Here in Oregon, it cost $95.00, and since I bought a new bike, Honda is paying me back $75.00 so I got off for $20.00. I want to take the advanced class (not that I am advanced), and may even consider becoming an instructor (I have to get some mileage, though).
