RE: mopeds
Scoots are FUN, I love riding them around the 'burbs. One of my 1st motorcycle courier jobs was on a Lambretta, (they do the most fantastic Mono's) & loved scrapping the boards on the deck. These days there is a great range, some big boys, 600cc (but then why not just get a bike?). For their design brief though, scoots are terrific in the burbs & city, lots of storage & slick design. If your going to get run over by a Mack truck, the size of wot your riding is going to make sod all difference anyway.

Ha! I hadTrail 70 when I was younger. They had some wicked scooters when I was in Paris last Summer. Some of them even had tops, and blanket-like tarps that would cover the rider when they rode in the rain. I think we will start seeing more of them too. Sometimes I wave to them when I see them in oncoming traffic before I realize they are a scooter. I don't mind waving, but they never wave back because they are not bikers and don't really know.

I got the wife a Honda Metro a few years ago, I liked it, but she never rode it, so sold it. Move up here near Seattle, and scooters are everywhere and she wants another one, she swears she'll ride it, so I get another, but this time it's a Yamaha Vino, all black, and chrome looks sharp. I put flush mounts on it, and a titanium arrow special parts full exhaust on it, more for me for a cool factor, even if it is a scooter. Well, cut to present day, she still never rides the damn thing but it is my go-to vehicle for beer runs and light grocery shops, tons of room under the seat and on the floor board. Gets 90 something MPG, insurance is 73 dollars a year for full coverage, and it'll haul my 190lb *** along at 40MPH. which is fine in my town. I can get anywhere in town on 35mph speed limmit streets and avoid the freeways just fine. It's cool. Guys at the gas station rib me but they know I ride my 1kRR so maybe its even more funny to see me on it, but it's just plain fun. Really if I wanted to go uber cheap but functional, I would have gotten the 125cc Vino. Same style, just a little bigger, 70 or so MPG dirt cheap insurance still, but it'll do freeway speeds. Hell, those go for 2K or so, not including the cost of the bike, the thing costs like 20 bucks a month to own and operate. It's fun on two wheels and super super cheap, can't beat it for what it is.
