What can I expect when taking the written part of the M class license?

you can expect lots of confusing questions, long lines and hot weather.

+1 also if you glance throught the book and it all makes sense then you wouldnt have a prob. but its worth it lookin throught the book
that is here in FL tho

HTTP://www.MSF.org will give you most of the answers for the FL test (and most other states base their tests on the MSF curriculum as well) read them once, and you should be able to pass the test.

yeah most are easy but there's always one or two questions that are convoluted on purpose ... but on the rest: just DON'T over think them .. I kept making them more difficult than they really where thinking the answer can't be that simple, when they really where.

p.s. i take it from your question that you don't have a permit? i didn't have to take the written again for the M with a permit.
