Question looking to get a CBR what do i need to know?

Hey all, I’m looking to become a member of the CBR family. Before I buy what do I need to know? I would like to know the ups and downs of owning a CBR and how it stacks up to other sport bikes. Most likely I will be buying a used one between 2000-2008. I’ve been told by friends that I should not ride a bike smaller than 550 cc because of my size (6’2 and 230 lbs) so ill be looking for a 600cc

Thank you for your time and advice

Sid

Rod is right, Sid, your prior experience determines a lot of the advice you will be given. If you have some experience, go for it, CBR's are great bikes.

If not, I would suggest you start on a 250. I'm 6'6", 200 lbs, and I learned on a 200cc Suzuki dual-sport. The 2001 CBR 929RR I own now is the first bike I have ever owned for myself, but I have logged hundreds and hundreds of miles on other bikes, on everything from the 200cc dual sport to a Suzuki SV1000S.

I would have to ask also what kind of riding you plan on doing. I would have preferred to buy a smaller bike for myself, and if all I had planned on doing was tool around town, that's exactly what I would have done, probably on a Kawi Ninja 250.

However, I commute between 20-40 minutes every morning at 60-80mph on the highway to and from school and work, and a 250 just isn't practical for that kind of extended riding. So I looked at 600cc and bigger bikes. I wanted a 600 (preferably a zx-6r or ninja 650R, I found Kawi's to be very comfortable for me) but found a great deal on this 929RR that a friend was selling, so here I am.

Anyway, I know that was long and wordy, but the bottom line is that we need to know more about your prior riding experience, as well as what type of riding you plan on doing, if you want the best advice possible.

Unless your new one a bike, I wouldnt go for a 600. I had one (6'2") and I looked rediculous on it. Way to big for the bike. If I can ever afford another bike itll be a 1000. Hopefully a R1.

Let me get this straight - you're telling someone, regardless of their riding experience, to get a 1k just because you're "too tall" and "looked ridiculous" on one? Wow.

thanks for all the great info guys, sorry for not giving more details, I got my motorcycle permit when I turned 18 and rolled around town for a summer on a old 250cc Honda rebel, after summer I went to college and sold my rebel and got a car since I live in Maine (= snow and below 40F 9/12 out of the year) now that I’m 27 I want a bike again. I’ve taken the safety class to get my permit again and this is where I am now.

So DDCavi I should go with something bigger? Please don’t flame me when I ask this, is there some kind of "restrictor plate" that I could install on a bigger bike so it’s not so fast until I’m not so green anymore? Or should I forgo looking good until I can handle a bigger bike and just stick with the 600?

Get a 600. Getting a 1k simply because you're "too big" for one is ridiculous.

anymore I don't think that there is that much of an overall size difference between a 600 and a 1k (1k is 1.5 inches longer wheelbase same seat height). Personally I don't really care what I look like considering I can't see myself when I ride, it's what I feel like when I'm on it that matters. I'm almost 6'1 and I have a 93 600F2 and I love it. I can flat foot both feet when stopped, and it has plenty of power, more then I really need for the street anyways.

Why isn't this guy's post count going up? Weird... there's something fishy.

Pretty sure post counts don't change in Off Topic.
