The computer is thinking "x" amount of moves ahead of you based on yourplay. If you don't understand the different stages of the game (strategies), you will be at a decided disadvantage. It is just like it sounds: Some people come onwith a strong offense(beginning game), some people will be reactive after several plays and then form their strategy (middle game), and some will play defensively and wait for a mistake (end game). I am no chess player, but my Dad is very, very good. I've gained my understanding of the game from him...he is so much smarter than me. If you would like, he would be stoked to talk strategywith you.
