Default I hate computers.

So my 500 gig seagate hard drive took a **** on me yesterday. I went to walmart and picked up a new one to get all of my data onto it. I've spent the last 5 hours copying and pasting files. If I do too much, everything locks up and it takes me another 20 mins to get the computer to recognise my **** hard drive and boot back up. It absolutely won't clone with my boot disk.
This is seriously like driving a car home that just threw a rod. When im done, its garbage, i just need to get home.
Oh yeah, I have 350GB of data to recover. Fun...

That's annoying.

Did you install the OS on the new hard Drive and boot from there and make the old harddrive the slave?

It's strictly a storage drive. My o/s is on a pair of 10k rpm WD Raptor X's in raid 0. I tried an old 200 gig I had laying around with XP on it with no improvement.
edit: and sata doesn't have master/slave jumpers. Boot device priority is modified in the bios.

Just bought a 1TB Seagate sata w/ 32mb buffer for $109 on Dell home.

Geeks.com had 500 barracuda's sata for $50.

Yeah, I saw those deals but walmart was 10 minutes away. And anways.. I'm just going to return my old drive in the package... let them deal with it.
It's still well within warranty, I just need my data right now.

Well, this could be risky..but might fix your problem....You might want to reformat the master boot record. Fixmbr in windows recovery console.
Doubt it will make a difference though, since it's not your primary drive.

Ohhhhh for F***K sake!!! The forum is up to its old tricks again!!! I was trying to say, hit it up with Knoppix or Fudora. They should have no problems at all reading the disk and you might be able to do it faster than with windows.
