HP laptops

I am looking at getting a new computer and wanted some feedback or opions on them. I am looking into a HP Pavillion 9000 series. I was told Dell and Gateway are crap. Opions, preferances are welcome. Its sort of a Christmas present to myself while still paying off the bike.

HP = ****
Dell = decent
Gateway = decent
Acer = ****
eMachines/other **** names = ****
Alienware = **** (now is owned by dell so idk)

I have had all of these brands are these are just my opinion.

Right now I have a gateway tablet laptop and it has been good to me.

fan of dell myself, everyone has an opinion, so you are going to get lots of different answeres. Have you checked out consumer reports? They are really good at giving you an overview without personal bias.

Does sounds like you have your mind made up already. Just get what you like... they are all made with the same crap inside anyway.

And on second though, it really depends on what you want to do with it and how much you are willing to spend.

For example, if you want really good internals (such as ATI graphics card, top of the line processors on the quality side) then IBM is a good choice. However, they tend to be very expensive for what you get. They want close to 2k for a laptop with like 512MB RAM and 80GB HD.

But for basic home/school use Dell usually has the best deals and customer service. They also do free troubleshooting/phone service and have good warranties which are hard to come by nowadays. Good luck

Good pont MD, I buy a lot of things based on their ratings and opinions. The only problem I have with Dell (my home computer and work laptop are Dell) is the customer service. I can't understand the techs. I have never actually had them help me fix my problem, either (not that I've had many).

+1 with the foreign techies...but they are all that way nowadays. Sometimes you'll get lucky and get someone from the US that doesn't lie about their name being Jason when you know damn well it's Habib!

That is so funny! I've often thought they have strangely American names for someone from India..."Ello, my name is Ratnakar...I mean Bubba, can I elp you?" There is a show by the guy who did "Supersize Me" called "Thirty Days" where people put themselves in a situation the opposite of their beliefs. Anyway, one episode had a guy go to India to live as an outsourced phone operator (tech support) for thirty days. It is a prestigious job in India and they take a lot of pride in it. Gateway actually advertises that they have 100% North American based tech support. Sorry about the threadjacking so...what about the Sony Viao? Does anyone have an opinion on those?

I bought a Viao FE series a couple months ago and love it.

I think you pay a little more for Sony, i paid $1,600ish for one that has a 100GB HD, 2 GB duo processor, 1 GB RAM, the better screen option, WinMC, Win Basic Office, the better DVD re-writable option, and the integrated video card. I kind of wish i upgraded the vid card, but was told i can do that later if i need to. I dont play a lot of games on it, but it can handle the ones i do so far. I like it because it is thin and light, but has a nice widescreen that isnt too big or small and runs great. No tech issues so far. Also, you cant beat Sony's LCD screens.

I'm biased though since i really like it and have not tried other companies, so take that with a grain of salt. Dont get salt in your keyboard though.

Apple all the way. The guys at my work use PC and I can't stand them. I think you'd be happy with a Mac. The new Macs with the Intel processor will run Windows XP also. I haven't checked into this feature that much though cause I only run Mac applications.

RE: HP laptops

Go for the MACS, i have two laptops and the mac is better than any PC out there...but if you decide to go for a PC, i'll recommend to go for a Sonny, other than that, the other laptops wok good for a while then they start to crash i had PC's and they alll go bad after awhile....but also remmember that you are going to get what you pay for. so dont go for them deals that dell has bout having a laptop for $500 that means $h!t...and Hp are found in WAl-MArt, well then they are not that good....and ACER SUCKS even thogh they have Ferrari on them...and if you want a gaming computer go for the Alienware stuff...WELL hope you make the right decision...MAC

RE: HP laptops

Again...all comes down to preference. Most programs you will want will be PC bases, but the good graphics/picture/video editing ones come for mac too (or only!). Macs are more expensive, but the dual core is awesome (which dell has also). Basically, Mac is Unix based and different style of operating system and can be a huge pain in the ass when it comes to running programs that work for different OS versions, yet can be simpler than Windows "user friendly" interface.

well i have a dell 8600 and damn have i put it threw alot of abuse for the last two years..and its has never craped on me. its was like 2000 when i bought it so basically its still kinda fast with 100gb hd, 128mb gfx card, and 1256 of ram. but now my girlfriend just got a new hp , i dont know exactly what model and they said the caps lock will sometimes come on and off like it pleases. and a few lil other times like that. a few of her friends complained of the same thing. my next laptop will probably be a alienware. im just waiting for vista to come out in end january and for them to get a good intel processor.

I had an Alienware Sentia that i bought last year for $2500, and it lasted less than one semester. The keys were cheap and crappy, the CD drive **** the bed, and it would randomly turn on and off. Ended up selling in on Ebay for $800...sigh. Hopefully Dell has improved the company since they bought it.

I know what you mean by the foreign techs but I heve never talked to them. Both my dells have crapped at one point, but I work them out, so its not a supprise to me. But I get past the accent by doing all my support with them over their online chat. It works really well and is perfect for me as I can type and understand them SO much better. If you ever need to fix a dell I would give it a try. If you can, Apples are great, but I'm a windows guy for life so I'll have to make due. But if you don't have any tie to windows get an apple, they may be a little more expensive, but its worth it sometimes. Every computer company has its horror stories and I have heard some about all of them, just depends on who you ask. Also, most people that post on the internet about computers are people who are unhappy, you just don't see post about things people like.... just the nature of things.

a brand on a pc does not mean ****. its wuts in the inside. like someone said its up to what u wanna do and how much u wanna spend. apple... i would never buy one. even if i got one for free i would sell it to get something else. the main resone y apple sells is easy of use to people not good with computers and what not. if u go with a name brand you will get a cheaper price. becouse there big companys. shop around and or go to stores like best buy and use the computers and see what u like.
