alright for those asking about that one picture that looks cartoonish, it is called HDR photography http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging

you can do it pretty easily with software and a decent camera....essentially you need a camera that has bracketing so that you can take a single scene at three exposures -1, 0, +1....then you use the software to blend the images into what you see.....that's the REALLY easy and basic story, you can do some pretty spectacular stuff with it....i plan on trying it out at some point, just haven't had a photoshoot yet at the moment...
