Default The Heimlich Maneuver Really Works

Some of you know, I had to make a trip to North Carolina over the weekend. My brother-in-law came with me on this trip. When we had almost reached our destination decided to stop to get some lunch at a local mom-and-pop restaurant. Just as we were to be seated a guy straight up the aisle in front of us started to standup and fill in the floor. I made my way as quickly as possible to him. There were several people just standing around this woman was yelling he was having a heart attack immediately after kneeling on the floor next to him I realize from his wheezing. He had something stuck in his airway he weighed about 180 lbs. so with my good arm, the right one. I wrapped it around his lower waist area and lifted him and myself off the floor. Getting him in an upright position to perform the maneuver on him and sure enough, outflow apiece of country fried steak I helped him set back down. And ask, are you good to go man. He responded with heavy breathing and said thanks man. But, I think you cracked a rib, and I sh*t on myself. I responded to him with I'm sorry man. You were slumping back down I tried to lean as far back with you and grasp in the right position. I have never had to perform the Heimlich maneuver before so I'm sorry if I hurt you in anyway he nodded his head and said no problem man. I am a live that is all that matters. We went on and set down and about half way through lunch Drew said to me. You save that guys life I said, I guess I did, maybe. Well just a second or two after that here come the kid with his girlfriend. As he walked up he was kind of smiling and said your meals only man. I just responded with no need in that. But he insisted and said he was feeling almost 100% well the next day when we were heading home we decided to stop at the same restaurant we got seated and was looking at the menu and the waitress came over and said are you the guy that helped John out yesterday when he was choking. I almost honestly said no, but I responded with the truth yes, she said I'll be right back to make a long story short, the kids mother came out from the back. Apparently she works there and wanted to thank me and just as we were leaving. They had called him and he showed up. He wanted his girlfriend to take a picture of the two of us in front of restaurant with his cell. For those of you who don't know. I hate having my picture taken, and I am about the worst in the world when it comes to accepting praise. I'm usually very embarrassed. I told the kid before we left. You should not feel like he owed me anything. There were a half dozen people standing around. If I hadn't reacted someone else, would have . Now, swt poet seems to feel like. In some way I slighted him by not letting him make a bigger deal out of it. What you guys think

Congrats man, you saved his life for sure!

There's nothing wrong with being humble, but if you are too humble it could be insulting. I think you did alright. Too bad you were the only one with the wits to react quickly, could have been a lot worse if you werent there

No way, I feel the same way. I have helped some people before and I just don't think anything about it. I just feel like that someone else would always do the same thing given the chance, its just that I was there and was first.

If you do the procedure properly, chances are you'll break a rib. So you shouldn't feel bad about that, especially since you helped save his life. Good job, and good story!

I would like to believe that someone else would have done the same thing as you. I teach Self Aid and CPR in the military and after going through courses and reading about how people react, the majority of people would have been scared to attempt anything. That is mostly because either they dont know what to do or because they are to scared to react. You did what had to be done to keep him from suffocating.

As far as you feeling like you didnt accept enough praise, that is all up to you. Some people love to get glory or rewarded for doing good, and some are like you who did what had to be done. I respect you for going beyond what you were comfortable doing.

I think there should be a hardcorp superhero doll on the shelf right next to GI JOE. You Go hardcorp! Ok, sorry for the ill humor, it was funny though.

You know me man, I'm right on the same page with you. I had to take classes like for my night job. Although I've never had to do it, I wouldn't think twice about it. Guess, like you, I'm just a very observant person. Two reasons why people don't react. First, then are just stupified by it and freeze. Second, some are afraid. I say screw that. There is such a thing as a good samaritan law.

I would hope that if that ever happend to me, someone would react more that with a look on their face or a 911 phone call.

Good story!

I agree100%!

I saved a little handicapped girls life last 4th of July. My girlfriend made a big deal out of it. But to me it was no big deal. Being Humble is what makes a person.
