Default That fine thin line.

Where is the line when it comes to freedom of speech VS sexual harrasment where is the line? Reason im asking is because lately my wife thought it would be funny if she got me a gift saying My other toy has ******* as a license plate frame.

I think it would be cool as heck to have but at the same time me being military i dont want to go on base and have some crusty ol Master Sgt get all offended.

I feel that it is my given right to display what i want on my own vehicle. I mean even military is allowed to have political bumper stickers yet we arent allowed to talk politics while on the job. So showing it (As in a bumper sticker) is allowed but talking about is is forbidden. Almost as if they are two different forms of speech. The silent kind is allowed and the verbal is not.

Any takes on this?

Thanks

Simple if ya think the brass won't like it and you take your career seriously and
plan to advance up the ranks ....why risk it ?

The right to do something is one thing ....... sticking your neck out over it a different
matter entirely

That's the reality of it or so it would seem..... making smart choices that is.

^^ I agree with sprock 100% (weird, huh? )
I wouldn't do it.

BTW, on a similar note.... Years ago I had a t-shirt that said "Viagra is for Pussies".
I was working as a subcontractor for a crane manufacturer laying pipe and doing water/wastewater work. I never saw anyone but my own crew and they didn't care what I wore.
However, one day I got a phone call from our client (a big guy in the company, too). He had apparently been on site doing an inspection and he saw my shirt.
Regardless of whether or not he was an a-hole (which he was) and regardless of "freedom of speech"..... I shouldn't have been wearing that shirt on his property. Period.
Rookie mistake.

Think this is one of those situations where the old saying is best reversed: It is better to ask permission than forgiveness.

Honestly, I wouldn't even ask permission... I just wouldn't do it.
People's opinions differ significantly about what they find offensive, and even if the big bossman says it's ok, all it takes is one person to make an issue out of something.
If fenatic is already asking about the "fine line", then it's close enough to not risk it.

True but I'm thinking Politics & Bureaucracy. If someone above me says "Ok", I can no longer be held responsible by anyone above him for any adverse reactions

I also use this when I want to give stupid supervisors a nice long spool of rope and wait to see the swinging silhouette under the old oak tree

Ah but Kuro if the higher up said okay and then started getting hell over it

Guess what - that ball of boiling hot wax won't stop at the higher up as it makes
it's way back down the chain of command .........everyone gets torched
especially the originator

And Trout ......... I'm getting very worried my friend ...........waaaay too much agreement with you lately

Yep. It's better to just do it rather than ask for permission. That way if someone gets offended your supervisor can just say "Sorry, my employees are stupid sometimes. I hadn't noticed, but I'll take care of it!" and the deal is done.
If you ask permission, get it, then someone else doesn't like it and you yell "he told me I could!"...... that's when the real chit hits the fan for everyone.

Well I think we've all hit the consensus that eventually there will be some chit hitting the undertail eventually if he rides onto base with it.

I just like giving the "not my supervisor but they think they are"s chit via official channels. Admittedly eventually they do try to get me back but never for doing what I let them tell me was ok to do

Good points. I have to agree with trout though. As cool as it would be to have it i dont think my chain of command would appreciate it. After all it does only take on to spoil someones fun.
