My son only has a helmet and he's fine, not sure how old the boy is mine was 2 in this pic and I set the throttle to walking speed so that he coulnt hurt himself....(sorry bout the su-sucki but it was dirt cheap)

I totally see where ur coming from in wanting to get him gear, I rode from age 5-15 without anything but a helmet and gloves and I turned out alr...well maybe not alright but im alive

If its an issue bout cash which is my case get one piece of gear here and there and before you know it he's set

if it was my son i'd set the throttle/carb way down so he cant haul *** and hurt himself and let him shredd...

but what a great uncle you are for getting him a bike PROPS to u my friend

Glad to hear you and your sis worked things out, and the kid gets to ride the bike. Maybe as a good compromise, you can things around the house, and things he already owns as protection. I'm sure he has some winter gloves, or something like that. I'm sure he has some sort of boots, may it be for rain or track. Then for the jacket, i'm sure a few layers will work just as well as a jacket. Best of luck!
