I live in Southern Oregon. While we seem to lead the country in minimum wage pay, we also have the highest teen pregnancy, highest unemployment rate, and pay way more than the national everage for fuel. I got gas the other day (it is illegal to pump your own gas in this state), and I was helped by a guy that used to be a customer of mine. He said pumping gas was the only job he could get, and there were so many people that had applied for the job. He felt lucky to get a job that paid minimum wage. Hopefully his significant other has a minimum wage job as wellso they can be lucky enough to live in a motel or a piece of crap apartment. Times are hard...it is a good time to be able to play the blues.
wow
Either Orgonians are better then that or their afraid they will screw it up and pump gas in their exhaust pipe. I know they freak out if you start pumping (putting the nozzle in the tank) before they get out there. It was wierd the first time I drove in Oregon and tried to get gas.

Just remember that in these hard times when so many people are just barely getting by, your United States Congressmen just gave themselves a $4,700 raise.

So what? I get a raise every year (sometimes more often) too and I'm not willing to give mine up. Even if mine came from taxes I'd still take it.

When i work a min wage job I EXPECT full hours, dental, eye, health, and paid vacation.
Youd be surprised, but McDonalds has a dental plan, paid vacation, benefits through at&t, even a small scholarship if you are an employee while attending college.

I WOULD go with the people saying that minimum wage is minimum wage.. you know what youre getting when you get the job. So dont go expecting more without taking initiative and finding a better job.. but really Ive been seeing the problem that some people are bringing up.

My friends mom used to work for a company on a decent salary and even had her own company car to drive. She has a lot of job experience in a few fields and now she is working at a Wal-Mart because no one in the area is hiring.

Everyone that graduated high school with me that isnt currently in college is now unemployed (with exception of a few). They all got laid off around the same time this year and all worked with many different companies. The companies are being forced to downsize and they lay off my friends in order to protect the jobs of their older employees. It isnt due to a lack of initiative.

Ive got one friend with a baby on the way who is scraping up everything he can earn to put away and he cant find a good job right now. He got laid off from his earlier job and found another at a factory.. but the factory laid him off in 2 weeks when they completed their order and then proceeded to hire him back 2 weeks after hiring him just to lay him off again once they had finished their next order. The factories in this area cant even seem to make ends meet.. and this area is supported predominately by the factories.

I think we are in for some rough patches in the future.. but I think that we will at least reserve most of our quality of life. Yeah.. not as many people will run around with cell phones attached to the side of their heads. Maybe our country will begin to embrace the bicycle more. But I think that this is only going to slow down the growth of america for a while. We will make it through this.. just at the expense of some of the luxuries that we take forgranted for a little while.
