Carbon Fiber

I found a few places you can buy sheets of carbon fiber. Anyone every try to wrap some of their stuff in carbon fiber? I was thinking front fender, rear hugger, maybe engine covers. I want to make a headlight block out for the track also. Any info would be helpful before I drop $200 on a big sheet I can't work with.

As far as i know carbon fiber is virtually un-bendable.
I don't think you can reshape it. I think it has to be pre-molded in order to have any convex/concave curves.
I gather this information from a mirror block i bought. I tried to bend and break it just to see how strong it is. Correct me if i am wrong. It may be able to be heat treated and shaped from a certain temp.. I have no idea.
It looks to be made in layers and as far as the 3 dimensional look of it you can only work with it in 1 dimension unless you are manufacturing it yourself then who knows . That stuff is very expensive. I was thinking how cool and how strong a bike would be if all of the fairings were carbon fiber. Then i thought of how expensive that would be lol

my brother did a speaker box with some.the kind he used done just like fiber glass sheeting until it dried. After that you couldn't hardly do anything with it.

Last time I was around CF the technique was basically make a mold, lay the CF cloth over it (it's pliable in this state, actually kinda fragile, deweaves easily), trim excess then layer on the resin w/hardener. Then let it dry/cure. The more layers the stronger. Least thats the way it was done there. Getting the finish nice seemed to be the hard part. Might be missing a step or two, it wasn't really my specialty, just helped out on it some.

yep, once its hard your not going to change the shape of it

I found this Carbon fiber veneer. I think you could wrap fairings and other things with it. It would look sweet but of course it wouldn't be that strong.

Its the complete opposite. Its very easy to bend and is very pliable. Like the other poster said, you have to be careful of the weaves coming undone. Its just like fiberglassing, just with CF.

well, after it is cured...

This is worth a read if you are serious about it.

basically a guy makes carbon fiber doors for his mustang and takes you through it step by step with all materials needed. The same principles can be applied to making fairings etc.
