Default car stereo problem

Hey,
i have an 01 intrepid and im having problems with the stereo. First off, the origional stereo stopped working, its like it had no power going to it? the only thing that it would do is, the 3 equilizer lights would just constantly blink??
So last night i bought a wireharness and wired it up to an old sony head unit that i have and i was going to install that stereo instead. so i get the dash apart, pull out the factory stereo, get my sony one all hooked up, and.............. no sound is coming out. the unit powers up, and the cd player/radio plays, but no sound. so i unhooked it, brought it into the house and hooked it up to one of my house speakers just to make sure it works, and what do you know, works like a charm.
any ideas why the sound isnt working through the car speakers?? i've wired up numerous head units before, and the wires are all colour coded, so im sure its all wired properly, and again, the unit does power up and all... im stumped..

I have done some stereos on my vehicles before and I did have a 200 intrepid but didnt run into this problem. Do you car speakers make anytype of a noise when you power it up or anything? Did you check the output settings on your head unit, possibly they need adjusted? Im not sure just trying to through something out there

Dr you have a amlified system, if you look on your wiring harness for your sony there should be a blue wire that say- remote or amp on or something to that standard hook it up to the blue or blue/white(which ever one is not the power antenna an you should have sound if not pm me or hit me up at 704-827-3844 an ill walk you through it

My guess is your HUs are fine and you've got a stock amp somewhere that the wires run to which is what's really dead. Check under the pax seat, under the rear seat bottom cushion, and behind all your trunk lining.

2001 intrepid should use the two plug style harness, a black and a grey. right?
in the harness that you bought, in the black harness, there should be a BLUE wire. this wire is a remote turn on for any amplifier/amplified antenna. Your "old" Sony HU probably will only have a remote turn on wire (blue with white stripe)... connect this wire (blue /white) to the blue wire on the aftermarket harness, and plug it in.

so, as long as the unit turns on, and you get no sound, what I mentioned (and someone above me had), is the solution to your lack of sound.

Correct, 2 plug style harness, black and grey you got it!

John, like you and brakeswhatbrakes mentioned, i do have 2 blue wires actually, coming from my sony head unit. one is light blue and says ATT (im assuming antenna) and the dark blue one says AMP REM max 0.3a.
However, the wiring harness that i have doesnt have a blue "amp" wire on it. The only blue wire thats on it, is a dark blue wire that says "Power Antenna" so i dont have anything i can connect my "amp" wire on my Head unit too ????????????? any idea's?????????

if you still have the package for the aftermarket harness, it should have a diagram on the back to tell you what color the amp turn on is. unless they sold you an un amplified harness. i do know that some cars same year model run to different style harnesses depending on if they are amplified or not.

I was a car electronics installer for a decade (up until I got my Electrical Engineering degree) so I still have a lot of this stuff memorized. On aftermarket radios (built after 1994), solid blue has always been the turn on signal for a power antenna, or antenna booster, and blue with a white tracer was a low current turn on for amplifiers.

The ATT stands for ATTENUATION. Depending on the circuit, if that wire receives a ground or a 12v signal, the audio signal is muted.

The wire you are looking for is indeed the dark blue AMP REMote wire. They didn't sell you the incorrect harness -- its fine. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles use that 'solid blue wire in the black aftermarket harness' as an amp turn on circuit OR power antenna/amplification. I have not seen too many late model Chr/Dod/Jeep vehicles with BOTH amplified AND power antenna systems.

To recap: DARK blue on Sony HU to the only blue on black harness you bought.

hey John,

So i took the blue Rem amp wire on the back of my sony unit, and hooked it up to the blue "power antenna" on the wire harness and hooked it up in the car, and..................

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the input guys, im forever in your debt!! i havent had any music coming from my car in over a month now, its been crazy. i HATE driving in a car without having anything to listen too, especially on longer trips! ARGH!!

Just one more thing BT. Is running an aftermarket HU to a stock amp gonna cause any problems, such as over heating etc etc ????????????????

i visited an intrepid forum and basically eveyone was saying that, if i install an after market head unit, that i HAD to bypass the stock amp or i could run into problems?? any truth to that?
