I am curious too, whats the vehicle. If its by chance a GM product i have had daignostic problems with the cam sensors also, and a lot of times its the crank position sensor or wiring, it sits right near the oil pan and under the oil cooler lines and gets coated in leaking oil, the 2 sensors feed off one another and walaa, it throws the cam code but its the crank. Anyhow thats my 2 cents.

No it's not a GM, it's a 1997 BMW Z3. I don't remember the exact code, I just remember both my mechanic (not the dealer) and the dude at autozone telling me it's for the "Camshaft Sensor" and my mech said it was for the same one he replaced. I didn't realize there was more than one .. I work very close to Auto Zone and can stop by and get the exact code if one of you thinks that would help you in helping me find out what the problem may be?

My mechanic is a close friend so I know he wouldn't steer me wrong but maybe he just doesn't know? The first 8 years every single service was done at the dealership but that problem didn't come up until this past year at which time I had stopped dealing with the dealer since it's not worth it on a 10 year old car.

Thanks for the input guys

What Make/Model/Year car is it anyways? - Frequently there are more than 1 cam sensors...

Do you have the exact code? - Dealers almost ALWAYS = "Insane" amounts to diagnose/fix.

As for the emissions thing - I think they have some goofy "Ready" mode on the emissions that require the car to have a full drive/cold cycle before they can certify them. - AKA - it needs to be cold, warm up, without the codes being cleared before they will consider the emissions system complete/correct. - Won't matter to you, but you may not want to mislead the buyer.
Yeah I called the dealer and they gave me a ridiculous quote to diagnose but even my mechanic friend said it wouldn't be worth the costs to diagnose it and that he's not sure what the problem could be since "the code is for the wire he just replaced."

I def. don't want to mislead the buyer ... I'm the type that will tell them every single little fault down to insignificant stuff even at the risk of costing me a sale. The only reason I mentioned that was because I actually did that: I went to mech and he said he couldn't fix it, I went to Autozone and had them reset it, went across the street and had them do emissions while light was off ... passed with no problems .. and the light came on as I was leaving the emissions place. they never mentioned anything about "full drive/cold cycle" .. not saying you're wrong, just saying I wasn't aware of it and they passed it without saying anything.
