Canada Introduced $10,000 Speeding Ticket

Posted 09:00:53 Thursday, August 16th, 2007

The Canadian Government is in dire need of money. In Ontario, Canada , Premier Dalton McGuinty announced that if you are caught speeding 31 mph (50 kph) over the speed limit, it will be considered that you were street racing, even if you're alone.

Getting caught street racing will set you back $10,000 (that US$ 9305), and serious jail time (up to 6 months). The new law also puts an enormous power in the hands of the Police, since all it'll take is the word of the officer that you were speeding.

The Safer Roads Act states "There is no appeal from, or right to be heard before, a vehicle detention, driver's license suspension or vehicle impoundment under the street racing subsection".

In order to make sure that they maximize the revenue they can generate from this new law, McGuinty proposes to hire 55 new traffic officers and buy a surveillance airplane. Judging by the costs, I'm quite sure that they have already established when they'll break even and start making a profit.[/align]

Assuming that's true, governments are just getting ridiculous trying to cover the spending gaps in their bloated budgets. Fire all the hacks and cronies, implement term-limits for everyone, get rid of tax-payer supported pensions, reducesocial programs, and that 31 mph over the limit would be where it should be: $500.

Yes most of this is true. Except for the government needing money, as our economy is very strong. And over 50 has alwaysbeen an automatic careless driving charge and subject to suspention. This has been brought on by several deaths caused by road racing this summer on a particular section of highway between Toronto and cottage country (Muskoka, You know, where Kurt and Goldie hang out). Unfortunately it is usually younger people in those cute little cars with the big mufflers always trying to better last week's time to the cottage, that are getting inocennt motorists killed. I hate to generalize, but that's the way it's been this summer.

I should add to this by mentioning that there is an upcoming provincial election in October, so, Dalton McGuinty who is widely considered to be a liberal weasel, is scrounging for votes. That being said, this law could easily be quashed should the conservatives get in. This sort of thing happened a few years ago with photo radar which ended up being very short lived.

I have heard that either Sweden or Norway or one of those other countries up there has a sliding scale for tickets. It is based on wealth and speed. So a guy like bill gates would pay $65000 for going 20 over.

It's funny but from the sound of it, everyone loves the 1 000 000 000 riduculous laws out there in the world.

I think we as human are just fine with just the 10 commandments.

Laws:

Keep your hands to yourself

Mind thy own business

Love thy neighbors

This is so rediculous...even worse the the new VA laws...when will it stop? The punishment should fit the crime. Thats like going 86 in a 55...i do that every day and faster. $10k could cause you to loose you house and be in debt for decades (some ppl). Loss of license for 10 years could make you loose your job. Impounded car just f*ing sux. This is such BS!

If I ever get a $10,000 ticket in Canada I'm moving to the USA. Just cross over and defect
Claim harsh and inhumane treat awaits you if the US sends you back to Canada. After all $10,000 for speeding is not only inhumane it's monstrously ridiculous.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was like some where in Europe where it's based on a % of your paycheck. He'll if a ticket is based on a % of your paycheck I wouldn't care if my ticket cost me a $200 because it would cost them policy makers $20 000!

But they're too smart to be passing such FAIR laws that will screw them selves over.

Live by the law or learn to break the law by re-interpreting the law like corporations, politicians, rich and famous, and lawyers!
