Can riding with open pipes really destroy your exhaust valves?
Some people have told me it can and some that it can't. I have yet to actually see or hear about someones bike actually damaging the exhaust valves.
If anyone has a story about a bike or a freinds bike that has been damaged because of it or of a bike thats been going forever without it with no problems i would love to hear it. But please only your own stories, not that you heard from a guy that his freinds uncles bike broke because of it.

I was told when I bought my SO for my dirt bike that a less restricting pipe can make your bike run lean. Which in turn will burn up your valves. I would assume it would be the same if you ran a open exhaust on a street bike without making fuel changes.
Burnt valves are caused by cool/cold air hitting the hot valves after shut down. Now with that said the only way thats going to happen is if there is no header or a bad head gasket that will let the cool air in.
When you shut the bike/car down the cool air that gets drawn into the header will be heated up by the headers, so no chance of cool air getting to the valves.
Drag cars run open headers all day long and their headers are no longer then a bikes exhaust system to the can.
Problem running open pipes on a bike is your actually loosing low end power (no back pressure anymore) and the fuel airmixture will be way off and probably be running real lean and cause damage that way. It's the same as having to re -jet after you add a performance mod that affects the HP.

I have been running as close to a straight pipe as you can get without actually being straight piped for about a year and a half not one problem, just the loss of torque at low end.
Engines designed and tuned with backpressure in mind will run lean without backpressure due to excessive cylinder filling with air. Engines that can adjustthe stoichiometry won't suffer from this problem.
