Boosting PC speed
ORIGINAL: Scrufdog
i wouldnt bother with RAID, unless as stated your running a heavy server....
that said, multiple partitions wont help if your still working off of one physical hard drive. set your downloads to go to something on the 500g if you havent already. Your setup is a good one, maybe even an overkill, but shouldnthurt speed.

Hey scruff dog. I have two hard drives, 300 & 500gig.
On the 300 I have 3 partitions. F: OS (30gig), W: games (134gig), X: programs (134gig)
The 500 has 3 partitions to just store movies/games/pics
Is that an ok setup? Whats the best way to set of RAID?

I've just always read since raid is two HD's working together, games and programs will load and play faster.
I did 3 partitions so things dont get crossed with each other and it keeps things clean. I know for sure I've read tons of time that the OS should be in its on partition.
Overclocking would be less of a bonus than going from 893cc to 919cc like in 900RR engines: maybe a few single percentage points. Cleaning and defragging your drive will help the most, as would a fresh install of Windows; otherwise, the most speed will come from upgrading to multiple cores and a new mobo. That, and choosing the right manufacturer:

Spirit. I'm a fan of AMD, but they've slowed way down. I went with Intel this time. Last Intel was a P1. LOL I feel dirty but I think I made a good decision tell AMD catches up.
True, though I wouldn't say way down, it's just that Intel re-grouped and got it back together. And it's pretty relative in the real world, not many people could tell the difference in speed between boxes with one or the other similar CPU's. I just would rather fork over the money to a company that's not an evil empire supporting the wrong team:

my AMD dual core FX60 does just fine. It gets along with my 2 GB of RAM, everything running at 208 Mhz 'fsb', cpu at 13.5x multi. I had it up to 3.05 Ghz from 2.6 stock, but my room is too much of a heat keeper, so I clocked it back to 2.8Ghz so its not so hot in the room.
I still have my 3000+ Winchester sitting around, waiting for me to do something with it. Stock 1.8Ghz that ran for 1 1/2 years 24/7 at 2.5 Ghz.

I upgraded from an FX-55. I enjoyed it a lot. I was able to clock it just under a hair of 3GHz. I tried everything to get it there, but it just would make it. Adjusting the HT, mulitplier, FSB, and voltage. She's just too stubborn. LOL Ram was doing just fine. I was able to keep it stock 201MHz speed with the cpu at 2935MHz.
Have it with a nice Asus mobo, so I know thats not the problem.

Overclocking sounds too complicated for me. My programs run OK, just seems to be downloads. They're not slow, but they do slow down when doing more than one at a time. I have cable so I'm not sure how much that would matter.
As far as spyware goes, I have PCcillin... isn't that good enough? I run scans 2x a week and remove any issues. Oh, and I clean off all my **** every time after I'm done.
