Anyone in the Fire Service???
I have been a Firefighter/EMT for about 4 years now. I currently work full time for the City of Boone Iowa. We are a completly full time department with three shifts of four and a paid Chief and AC. We run about 1000 calls a year. We do fire and rescue for our city along with about 200 square miles of rural area. I love the job.
Is anyone else in the fire service????

I think we have one or two members who are. If all goes well, hopefully in the next year I'll be attending our local firefighter academy. It's something I have wanted to do for a long time. I just need to recover from surgery on my wrist and get back to the gym to get in shape. Plus with me working full time, I have to wait for a night class at the academy. They only have one a year here in Jax.

I went to an academy about four years ago. I started as a volunteer at a pretty large suburb of Des Moines. It was a joint academy of four cities. I was a volunteer for about 3 years. I tested for three different departments over two years and I got hired full time in June of last year. It takes a lot of hard work. Take as much as you can for schooling and get whatever certifications you can. Having more education puts you just that much a head of others. Best of luck with recovery and with getting a fire service position.
Id love to do it, but Im tied to the Air Force until 2010. Thought about trying to crosstrain into it and do it for the military, but doubt my career filed would let me out. So in 2010, Ill probably be too old at 33, but we'll see what the Austin FD has to say.....
Im a fulltime FireMedic, Special rescue technician, for my city we only run about 800 calls a year it is a very rich city that is why we are full time will such a low call number.
