Advise on pool rendering :-)
Hiyu guys ...
Yer a weird topic for a CBR forum ..but hey 30,000 members ..alot tradies of some kind in here ..I thought I would ask the question ...
My latest home project that I have been working on over winter here is building my own small plunge spa in ground pool at home and I have gotten to the stage where I am nearly ready to render it ..
I have some knowledge of this process but would not mind a little input from anyone that has done this before or hopefully does it for a job now
Your prefered method, or render mix ratio, ... tools you used, ..ect any help would be great
I am getting conflicting advise regarding additives in the render ( not to add and yes add different things ) ... how to apply it ( onto wet concrete or dry )
How thick it should be ? ( I am going to 2part epoxy paint the finish) as I do not like the pebble mix renders..
thanks for any help on this topic will be appreciated
I have thrown in a few pics to give you an Idea of the job at hand ..
( looking down from up on our upstairs deck )
(the boss checking out my proggress so far -
( the boss wondering when the fu^%%^k I am going to finish it :-)
( All over view of the whole bigger project :-) yer I had to landscape as well :-(
I don't like gardening much .........

My personall opinion is hire those guys that shot the cement. If your solo you will never get a nice even and smooth finish. If you try to mix and apply by yourself you will run yourself ragged. That type of job has to be completed all at once.
They usually work in a team of 4 (depending on the size of the pool) One guy to run the pumper and keep the color even, one to spray the texture/final coat and two to trowel. They were spiked shoes as not to leave foot prints and the main thing is they do it for a living and are darn good at it compared to most of us.
I being a contractor would not even try or waste my money trying it on my own.

Yer I hear what you are saying mate ..
I know the render is a hit it once type of job ( all done in one day ) ..
The guys that I have spoken too about this say that it can be done with one person, but it has to be done in type of sequence moving around the pool as you go never leaving any one spot more than 1-2 hrs .. ..to maintain the wet edge .. ( no uneven drying )
I would like to get renderers to do it , but it is as you said its a 3-4 man one day effort and here that runs you around $1200-$1500 minimum ...
Aside from the fact that I have already thrown around $12.000 cash AUD into this and would prefer to not go and spend much more if I can avoid it.....I have this determined DIY attitude towards it ..
The concrete pump spraying guys I paid for because of the specialized equipment required to do it and I was not able to hire just the equipment ...
I tend to try to do most things , including building my own house's completely except for the electrics which I get my spark mate to do ... ( I have built 3 so far )
I do take what you have to say as very good advise mate ... but I am going to give it a go
The render is only around the $200.oo mark to purchase all the needed sand cement ect ...
as aposed to $1200-$1500 minimum ...
I am not filthy rich so I am going to try to save the $1000.oo
thanks for your advise in any case mate

You know us Aussies like to stir with a straight face. Yeah I know that Vic can get hot & yeah its a cheap shot, but could not resist it. In fact I like Melbourne a lot when I can get down there, (those hooked turns have me stuffed though)
Its 27C here at the moment, was 29C here yesterday, short, short pants seem to be the go for the girls this season Im pleased to say.
