So I get up and put several hours in on my mountainbike cause I have several epic races coming up.

Get home clean up and eat lunch, decide to spend the rest of the day on the CBR.

Gear up, go out to pre-flight and check my front tire pressure. 40psi, not bad and put the valve cap back on.

Just as I remove my hand from the valvestem I hear a slight "pshhht".

Hmm.

Not supposed to do that.

Reach back down and touch the stem, louder "pshhht".

Not good.

Touch it again and it breaks off in my hand. Apparently either fatigued rubber or dry-rot.

Dammit!

Oh well.

Both wheels are sitting in my truck, going to the shop in the morning. I figure if the front will do it then the rear prolly needs to be replaced for safety's sake.

 

good thinking......will save you some troubles in near future.

sometimes when mechs put valve stams in they rip a bit and everytime you move it it will rip a bit more until that happens.

 

So.......What kinda mountain bike you got? I was a roadie for a while, then I rode mountain for a few weeks and found myself selling the road bike and buying a rockhopper.

 

I've got the typical quiver - I've got a Turner Flux full-squish as my primary trail bike, and currently have a VooDoo 29er singlespeed - plan on replacing that frame in a couple of weeks with a Salsa El Mariachi. I've got a relatively budget-built Sette road frame built up with Ultegra for training and group rides.

I really want to move to a 29er full suspension, but that cash isn't in the cards right now.

 

Hey, at least you didn't lose your stem out on the road somewhere. That would have sucked.

 

nice. well its 40 maybe 45 degrees here, sunny. if we get this for 2 or 3 more days then ill be able to get it out of my snow filled yard, lol. of course i have all the maintenance to do...so basically i need it to melt enough to get it to my stepdads garage, then a couple weeks or work... then ill take the 70 degree sunny day.

good luck with the tire, and like others said, good thing it didnt happen at full speed
