In VA you pay sales tax at the DMV when you register a newly bought bike from a provate seller.
When i bought my 1999 F4 for 3600 i asked the seller if he would be willing to sign the title and a receipt that said i only paid 2k. He knew what i was getting at and didnt have a problem with it. Most sellers in this area help each other out.
Sounds like you just paid a lot of sales tax.

true this, since i was broke at the time i bought my bike, i took out a loan, and TTL was included in that. hence why i only paid $45 at the clerks office. when i bought my accord the guy said he would put down $1 so we didnt have to pay taxes on it.
any car deal or motorcycle deal i have ever done ive never put down more then 100 $ for the bought price. why should dmv get more of our F'in money ! dmv doesnt check it or anything ive sold many cars where it says 50$ and dmv has never said **** to me ... most of teh clerks arent stupid they know whats going on but do they care ? no. so just as a tip next time put down 1- 100$ and be happy knowing that later you will be paying less
btw im here in CA

I just payed 398, but that was for 15 months so I wouldn't have to go back in 3 months to re register. But yeah they go by the selling price, My DMV will look up the value in the dealers black book if they think your trying to con them so you have to be careful of what you tell them...
