Default 21 Year old looking for his First Bike!

Hey guy, I roughly have 2000 saved up and i plan on saving more up. but what is a good street bike? I used to have a 250CC Dirt Bike and loved it! i got to riding it good. now i wanna get me a Street Bike to take out on the weekends and when ever i need to feel free.

I perfer a Honda But what ever is cheapest without being built cheap and breaking. i want one that isn't gonna be breaking down on me. I'm a Mechanic and have 3 cars one a 5.0 Mustang that i did a auto to 5spd swap on but not a Motorcycle Mechanic lol.

So i want you guys to interduce me into the bike world and help me find abike around $2000-$3500. I like the little street Ninja's and i want one mainly to race in and go really fast, not to do tricks and stuff.

Thanks alot!

hey Travis, I am in the UK so can't comment on what dollars buy but here anything from about £1000 to £2000 is going to buy an older but decent middleweight bike, things like Honda Hornets, CB500S, Suzuki Bandit, Yamaha Fazer, all good and reliable bikes but I do prefer Honda build quality and style ... if only just starting out a Ninja 250 is a great bike to learn on before progressing to a 600, I actually spent a lot of time on a Ninja 500 (GPZ500S) before progressing to a 600, the 500 taught me a lot without being too much power...

Good luck finding a bike :-)

For that price you can definitely get up through the recent f4is for sure; I paid 3k for an 02 f4i. TBH, you're going to need to do some work though if you're planning on racing. None of it's going to be hard necessarily but even a basic older bike will in all likeliness need some maintenance done once you purcase it.

Welcome I'm in Houston too. I'm on the South East side of Houston if you want some advice I've been riding since 2000.

A good starting bike for 2000 bucks is an older ninja 250 kawasaki. You can ride it as long as you need to get comfortable and save up to buy a bigger bike in the mean time. Then you can turn around and sell that Ninja 250 for very close if not the same price you bought it form. They hold their resail value VERY well.

in 2007 I bought a 2006 Ninja 250 with 1400 miles on it for 1400 dollars. It was in great condition. I rode it for 3k milles to work and back just because I didnt want to take my f4i to where I worked at the time. I then sold it in 2008 for 2500 dollars so the deals are out there. PM me if you want any personal help if you are near NASA in Houston.

I would get a Ninja 250, you don't want to get an F4i and not be able to handle it and break your leg LOL. Maybe a GS500 I have an '92 and it rides around town nice. You should also look at supermoto bikes. I ride a '04 CRF450R it is a blast to ride and it is not over powering. The supermoto's can beat most bikes in the tight curvey stuff. Mine is setup to go ~100mph that's as fast as you want to go on a supermoto. These are all good starter bikes. 600's are not good bikes to learn on. The RR's are really not for new riders.

Breaking a leg on a F4i is not a shot at Elf is it?? j/k

But, that does bring us to the next topic...gear.

You need to budget about $500 to get you started. Start trying stuff on and looking for deals. I owned my helmet, jacket, and gloves three monthes before I hd my bike.
You save money when you are not pressed into having to have it right then.

Bahahah if it is, I probably deserve it. Truth be told I could have broken the leg just as well on the Ninja doing the turn I did- 40 pounds difference isn't much when it comes to 300+ pounds landing on your leg. Gotta be honest though, from riding the Ninja for a month, if you *do* get one- get an 08 or better, the older carbed ones are **** compared to an f4i.

I think you can handle an f4i as a first bike- buy it used, expect to rash it up a little. I wouldn't say get an RR though.

I got a 250 a few months ago for my first bike, dropped it twice on my first 2 times out (once bad on my ankle, if it was a bigger bike i may have broken it, but probably not). That said I got bored as hell with the 250 after 200 miles, and picked up an f4, and it's actually a lot easier to control, and feels 100x better on the freeway (I weigh like 190). Conclusion: if you don't weigh under 150, get a 500. Also don't be a dumbass.

Also the 08 and newer ninja 250s are still carberated (in the US). And the older ones are faster then the newer ones, although they are ugly as all hell, and they're both **** compared to the f4i.
