Should i buy this bike?!
hey all, im new here..and new to bikes. my buddy just bought a brand new CBR 600 F4i and ive always been interested in bikes. so i hit up the good ole Craigslist. and found this.
http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/mcy/1850168941.html
the guy said it ran great before the Timing chain broke. and i know from past car experiences that this could spell trouble. but thats why im here. you guys are the experts. you think its a good buy? its only 600 dollars.
how easy is it to change the timing chain?
is it expensive?
do you think it hurt the motor?
thanks in advance for any input.

dont buy it. I got my f2 in running condition for 600. Buy a running bike.
Let me say it again, BUY A RUNNING BIKE!
I have learned that most people try to cover up problems to sell their product. It may only need a timing chain to run, but more than likely needs a whole new bottom end and all the valves replaced. Don't take the chance, buy something that you can hop on today

A 95 CBR 600 set up for stunting. id just have to replace the stunt sprocket with the normal one..which he has.

If it is ready to ride with touch of TLC it's not bad, although I'd use the tank condition and any other small issues as a reason to talk it down. If the motor rattles on startup (CCT noise) then you can talk like you're really concerned about that rattle, but would be willing to risk it for a decent cut in price. (It's a $65 fix that takes about 20 minutes to perform, but they don't have to know that)
remember - the guy selling was wanting a beater/stunter bike, you're wanting something to ride regularly.

See the diff between worn and new here:
Take a nut-driver w/ you to inspect the bike - I think it's a 8 or 9mm bolt - 3 of them - to pull off the front cover just to inspect the drive sprocket. Count the teeth while you're there - 14T or 15T is most likely what you'll find. Anything less than 14t and you have a weird front sprocket on the bike too.

I want to say as well, that with timing chain issues, if its been broken, then you can pretty much count on valves being damaged too, I believe most of the honda 600, thru 1000 motorcycle engines are "interference" motors. In other words, without the timing chain in place and runnig properly, the valves can, and more than likely will hit the piston tops if the timing chain breaks.
