I had an 06 CBR f4i staring me in the face at an awesome deal a week before I took my BRC and got my license. Anyhow, I have never driven a bike before and the CBR is my first bike. I just took the BRC and did pretty well in it outside of overthinking a few times and not just relaxing. My biggest concern is that maybe I shouldn't have gotten a sportsbike as my first bike. I'm versed on using a clutch as I've driven manual cars quite a bit etc so that part wasn't too hard. Any advice on being a newbie? thanks!

Well,where do I start? THere are many out there that think a 600cc sportbike is never a good choice for a newbie, but I can tell you from personal experience (I started on a '87 Hurricane 600) that that may not actually be true. Granted,my intro into motorcycling would have been easier on a smaller bike or cruiser, but I did just fine. Just take your time to learn and dont ride over your head.
Fortunately for you the F4i is a stupid easy bike to ride so that may make it easier for you to "learn the ropes"

+1 on this. I started on Isabelle my 02 600F4i. Just take your time and respect the bike and you'll be fine.

You already did a great job with starting with the safety class. So now just get out there and practice. keep it during the day and in low traffic areas or neighborhoods / parking lots until you're comfortable.

I know my first few weeks of riding I had a lot of trouble taking right hand turns from a stop . Seems so silly now

 

I have been on dirt bikes my whole life and then went to a cbr900rr looking to get the new 600rr in the upcoming year. so as long as you remember the throttle is in your hand you will do good. go ahead and check the "how to: riding skills" their is a lot of good info there and try to get with someone who has experiance and ride with them thats what helped me a lot... and welcome to the forum

Take it slow, try and stay relaxed but attentive, and remember what you learned.

 

Sounds like my situation, thought about getting a bike and stumbled onto a great deal on a downed 04 f4i, i made her pretty again and have been riding her around. Ive had experience on dirt bikes since i was 8 and i think a 600 is a great starting bike. With that said, still use caution and take a lot of time to get a good feel for it, and make sure you wear ALL gear.

 

Thanks for all the advice. I got a stupid cheap price on my 06 f4i! I couldn't pass it up and this was BEFORE I took the class and got my license! I just picked up the rest of my gear last night and am excited to get started this weekend practicing. My turns are what's getting me a little, but it's getting easier!

From my experience of racing mx just remember you lean with the turn and your counter stearing on a sport bike
