Welcome to the forum carzyduckie!

Well, the best suggestion for LA riding is - to be extremely aware of everything happening around you on the road! But, I'm sure you've already discovered that! ;-D All j/k aside, awareness & the Two-Second-Rule. Just give yourself time to react to surrounding traffic. Ride your own ride & be safe. AND, if you're going to split lanes, take it slow & watch for vehicles changing lanes w/o signaling.

As we all like pics here, post up pics of your new ride.

Try to find some times/places where traffic is light (lighter) to get some time on the streets to build your confidence and skills. As you progress move into the heavier traffic flows. Be honest with yourself about your skill level and try to be "extremely aware" as gotcbr suggests. It's easy to fixate on what's directly in front of you and not see the vehicle that nails you from the side.

Depending which part of LA? What time during rush hour you ride? It's controversial, but in my opinion and most HD riders, louder pipes saves life...cars he in LA, exhaust, rush hours, stupid drivers ditto? Having a louder pipe my be annoying to your neighbor but will definitely help make other driver hears you coming....LA drivers most are very curious, driver hears something, their heads erect and scan where noise coming from?

Of course defensive riding, point of no return, expect for the worst may happen, and one killer left turn...either the car in front facing you signaling a left, left turn coming out from a driveway...just be very cautious...at but not least ATGATT....

Nice looking bike!

Yep, in the greater LA area (405/5/101 especially), splitting is a necessity. Just be sure not to go too fast to react to those erratic non-signaling lane-changers. I'm sure you've already experienced this tho. ;-) Riding the double yellow btwn the HOV & regular lanes does provide a little extra space for splitting.
