think small, get a 250 cc bike or smaller (old, new, used, borrow it, whatever) and go to a huge, totally empty parking lot practice every day (weeks, months, years, whatever it takes) until you get use to it and think your good, then practice even more, then take the test...then let us know how it turns out. you will thank your self for doing it this way in the long run trust me.

-Get your written test done first.
- Find a friend, family members, or anyone you trust really to help you look at bikes. Have them test ride the bike because they will be able to tell if something is wrong with it. Pick up something you aren't afraid to drop until you have a few weeks/months of experience.
- Once you have a bike, get your practice in. Like Brent said above, find an empty parking lot to practice your starting, stopping, and turning. Also try to work on throttle control as best as you can for the 10-25 mph you will be going.
-After you "master" the parking lot, give the streets a go. Not sure on the laws there, but in Nebraska if you have your learners you have to ride within a certain number of feet from someone 21 or older with a valid motorcycle endorsement.
-Once you feel comfortable on the bike, enough to take the test, take it. Watch some YouTube videos so you know what to expect.
I recommend looking at these bikes for a starter: Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Honda CBR 250R, Suzuki GS500, Kawasaki Ninja 300, Suzuki SV650, Kawasaki Ninja 650R

Welcome to the CBR Forum Mike,
Lots of good advice above. I would say though, don't get suckered into the "I need a nice NEW shiny bike" syndrome. You don't. Get something your comfortable on and that you are not scared to drop. And you will drop it. We all did and anyone who says otherwise
Good luck with your hunt for a bike. And ride until it hurts your bum. It'll pay off in the long run.
Cheers, SB
