Hi all. Just wanted to say "Hi". I've watched CBRF for years and just decided to officially join. I have a 91 CBR1000F which I have owned since new with 135k miles, a 2001 VFR, and also a '90 CBR1000F (parts bike) I just picked up. I know people have mentioned in the past it's hard to find parts for these bikes so I may be able to help!

Hmmm, that's a good question. I guess I'm a true testiment to Honda reliability. Purchased the bike new in California, and drove the **** out of it for the first 9 months in the southern California mountains (Angeles Crest Hwy, Big T canyon, Newcombs Ranch for breakfast, etc). I changed the oil after 100 miles, and had the dealer do the 600 mile checkup at 1000 miles (4 days after purchase). Then I moved back to Wisconsin in Dec of '91, bike had 34000 miles on it. Did a tune up in spring of '92 at 35000 miles and ripped the CA emmissions off the bike. Took the bike to Willow Springs Raceway (very fast track, 2.5 miles and only 9 turns) a couple times for "track days" with friends. In 1997 at 70000 miles, I did another tune up and had a mechanic peek at the cams to check for wear. He said they looked "like new". Just before this a starting problem had started developing. No mechanics could diagnose the problem (I took it to 3 of them) so I've just lived with it. turnes out was the alternator damper as diagnosed on CBR Forum in 2007 (10 years later!). It slowly gets worse and worse, but I was always able to start the bike when cold. I had to bump start it when hot the last year or two. Dd a tune up at 105000. Then I cracked the block over winter of 2008 (don't ask, I'm still pissed), and bought the 1990 bike a month ago to "fix" the 'ol girl. Right now, the 1990 frame and motor are wearing my 1991 body panels, and the 1991 "bike" is for sale for parts.
Funny, looking back, I always used Castrol GTX "car" motor oil (20W-50) but still have the original clutch in the bike. I guess that answers the infamous "oil" question! Swapped the plugs every 25000. Aside from that, just lots of tires and some routine maintenance (chain, fork seals, brake fluid, etc.
Please, no lecturing from the "Ducati" crowd on scheduled maintenance.I get enough from my friends! I simply tell them, it's a Honda!
