My name is Zack, and I finally decided to buy a motorcycle. I've been wanting one for years but I always seemed to get tangled up into some car project when I had the money around. This time after I sold my last 240 I decided to pull the trigger and make it happen. My friend sold me his 06 f4i for a pretty good deal so here I am. I've been reading the forum extensively for a few days now soaking up information as I find it. I've discovered by searching, that my flushmount turn signals on the front were wired incorrectly and that helped me get the bike inspected and registered yesterday so thank you all for that!

This is the kind of stuff thats been consuming my time/money/life for the past 3 years.

So that's my background. I've fairly mechanically inclined but I know basically nothing about motorcycles. The only motorized 2 wheeler i've ever messed with is the motorized mountain bike I built (which I do ride with some regularity lol, 1500 miles in the last 2 years). So on to the noob stuff now:

I bought myself a jacket, some good gloves to keep the hands warm and the fingers attached, and my friend gave me his helmet with the bike. Is this an acceptable amount of gear for a commuter style riding guy like myself? I'd rather not pull into work dressed like a Power Ranger if I don't have to, but I'm also not gonna cruise this thing around in shorts and a t shirt.

Also this bike has 11,400 miles, so from what I've read I can expect the cctl thing to fail soon, and I think i'll need to get the valves adjusted around 16k? The bike has new tires and I just changed the oil. Is there anything else you guys can suggest to get build a good mechanical baseline?

Welcome to the forum Zach! Nice intro. Congrats on getting your F4i.

No worries about working on your bike... I'd say if you can work on cars like that, you can def handle issues/maintenance/mods w/ your F4i.

Good call on getting some gear. Its better to have it & not need it, than the reverse. In addition to what you mentioned, I recommend getting some good over-the-ankle boots. They don't have to be motorcycle riding boot specific but something that at least covers the ankle is a good idea. If you go down on your side, those ankles just grind along the pavement like a cheese-grater.

Regarding the CCT... Don't worry about it too much. They -rarely- fail all at once...instead, they start to "click" - lightly at first, then moreso. There's no set timeline or mileage on CCTs.

As for the valve adjustment... Mine didn't need it at 16K. When I finally checked it again at 24K, it was still in spec. So, its all gonna depend on the individual bike is to when its actually needed.

Good to have you w/ us.

I've put 2000 miles on this rig in a little less than a month. I finally stopped for a moment today to actually take a picture or two of it. So far i've put a yoshi rs3 slip on, and a k&n air filter on it. That's really all I plan to do besides maintenance stuff and a pair of bar risers. Anywho, here it is:

Nice tuxedo!

As far as gear, get a set of chaps. They do the job and are easy to slip off for the side-walks. Heck, I've even done that on the side-walk, bath-rooms optional for the really shy. ;-) But the worst rash I ever got? An early spill in my career that burned both hips and a knee. So, I do recommend some form of pant/leg protection.

Hope that helps, Ern
