Welcome to the forum. Man, it is good to see a 17 year old get a good learners bike instead of tryin to rock a brand new 1000rr as their first bike! Smart move man. Ride safe and Ride forever! Get your permit, take the safety class, get you licence and take it slow. Have fun and we'll see ya out there!

If your are age 16 and 17 and have satisfactorily completed drivers training, you may apply for a 24 month instruction permit to operate a motor driven cycle (under 150 cc).The permit allows you to drive only during daylight hours under the direct supervision of a licensed motor driven cycle operator 21 years or older with at least one year of driving experience.

Thats what the Illinois Motorcycle Operators Manual says.Im sure you may be able to sneek into a class somewhere and get licensed that way.
