Default New CBR 1000F Owner

Hello everyone,

My name is Ken and I live in CT. I got a good deal on this bike but I will have to do some work on it this winter to ride it in the spring of '11.

Here is a post I put on the General Tech area. If anyone can help me out it would be awesome!

I just purchased a 1991 CBR-1000F which has been sitting for 3 years. found a bad rectifier so far. checked positive 12 volts to the coils-seems good. Is it possible the rectifier would prevent the bike from starting? If this is not the case, what's the best way to troubleshoot the no-spark condition? I'm purchasing the new rectifier but before I install it, is there anything that could have taken this component out, that I should look at before whatever it is or could be, blows the new rectifier? Basically, I have no spark and a bad rectifier. Any help troubleshooting this will be greatly appreciated!

Default Welcome

Welcome Ken, with the R/R's , it's a common problem for them to go bad.
Post up to the Hurricane section with some pics and say Hi.

Is the plugg and wiring into the R/R cooked ??

Welcome Ken.
workshop manual at www.blackbears.ru
or www.carlsalter.com.
Don't buy a standard reg/rec........buy a model RR23 from Electrex.
Cheaper and has a year's guarantee. Std unit has no guarantee even brand new.
A bad reg rec will cause the battery to drop voltage quickly. These bikes need a good battery, full choke and clean plugs and fuel to fire up. Do those things first. A bad reg rec won't prevent the bike from starting, generally speaking.

Hello!

Yes the plug is blackened and melted a bit. My real problem is with the no spark condition. I need to test the spark generator before it gets to the computer to see if it is bad....any ideas?

Welcome, Ken!
Have you downloaded and read the manual yet? There's an ignition troubleshooting section w/ flow chart, etc.
HERE is a link directly to the manual download.

I wouldn't think it would be a bad ignition control box. Are you sure your battery is 100% good? R/Rs like to cook batteries and these bikes need a good charge to spark correctly.

Yes I have the manual...sounds like the rr could be causing the spark problem....we'll see

thank you!
