Default Need Help!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the site but have always loved honda cbr's over any other style bike. I'm calling on help because I am a Marine stationed in CA looking to purchase his first ever sportsbike.

Mostly been looking at CBR's and have found a few in my price range but I want to make sure I am not getting ripped off and want a good deal. Everything in Cali is way more expensive then anywhere else its sick.

But I found a 2001 CBR F4I for sale, they are asking for $4k. The bike is basically stock besides a aftermarket exhast and power commander. Bike as 9800 miles, will need new tires soon maybe 30% tread left and small indecations that bike has been dropped not laid down but dropped.

Help would be much appreciated. Or if anyone in SOCAL area is selling there CBR for somewhere around 4000 I would be interested.

Also sidenote. I'm a pretty big guy 6ft 3in and 220lbs. will a 600 be enough for a starter bike? also any recommendations on upgrades or customizations to do to help my tall *** a little more comfortable while riding?

Hello & welcome to CBRF!
$4k might be a bit much for a '01 F4i these days so I would definitely do some searching first. A 600 supersport is PLENTY if not too much for a newbie to start out on. I would suggest getting enrolled in a MSF course.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Welcome to the CBR Forum,

The 600 is a good starter for you. Do the rider training and wear all the safety gear.

Cheers, SB

Welcome.

In our area, $4k is about right for a starting point if the bike is super clean. I'm sure he expects to sell it for less, but that's all negotiable. Since it has damage and will need a tire soon plus whatever else, offer him way less and meet in the middle. Bring cash to put out there.

Welcome to CBRF! Thanks for your service to our country. Definitely do the military riding courses, they're great. The people that teach them know their ****. As far as a bike, get a 600, don't go to the 1000's yet. A)Insurance will be cheaper. B) You'll be out-riding all of your friends that bought liter bikes before you know it because you'll have learned faster.

Keep looking on CL. Don't be afraid to go look at one. If you don't know bikes mechanically, find a fellow marine that does - I'm sure there are plenty guys around the base that will know. Just remember, a better deal will ALWAYS come along. Good luck.

welcome to the forum -- $4k is a bit steep for a 2001f4i, even with the low miles. (to give you an idea, i bought my 02f4i/3k mi back in 2005 for $4500.) and the power is plenty for any rider.

Thank you all for the great advice and the warm welcomes. I am taking the motorcycle courses next week to help me learn before I start riding my own. Not to mention they are required to have before you can ride in the military lol. I can't wait to get my hands on a CBR and finally get that freedom! Also looking found a 04 RC51 for $3800 has 16k and some pretty good upgrades. is there anything special about this model compared to a 929 or any other 1000s?

the rc51 is a v-twin, not an inline 4 so the power characteristics will be that of a v-twin. tons of torque down low.

Buying your first bike, and making it a sportbike, I would suggest GOOD frame sliders and a steering damper if it (your choice) doesn't come with one. Don't skimp on your tires when it comes time to buy them because you have plenty of power to get in trouble with cheap tires. Be safe.
