Hey everyone. Driving the car to the big smoke on Saturday (family onboard) I came up behind a couple of dawdlers and waited for a spot to overtake. I came to a straight, stuck my car out for a look and all seemed clear. Something made me choose not to pull out, and I didn't indicate or move any further over. The road was covered in broken shadows in the mid afternoon, and out of those shadows a black bike appeared. He was right over near the middle of the road, which is mental when there's more than one car coming towards you, and had no light on and everything was black...can you guess the brand? Dead set, I must have looked right at him, but didn't see him in the shadows!

Anyway, I realise if I'd pulled out it would have been entirely my fault if I'd killed this bloke and his missus on the back, but probably the only reason I didn't is because I ride too. Was he just too badass to need lights on? Couldn't his bike's electrics run a headlight? I'll never know, but if he'd ride with his lights on (still nobody home though) he might live longer!

It really bothered me that I could have wiped someone out..

 

I must have looked right at him, but didn't see him in the shadows!

But you know us shadows are easy to miss.........

 

Yeah you gotta run with lights , day or night ! The headlight is possibly the best safety aspect on any bike , prevention being better than cure

As it should be everywhere.
My lights don't have an "on/off" switch
But then mine's one of the special blue and silver ones, yaknow.........

 

Thanks fellas. I had that real sick "what if?" feeling in my guts after, even though I didn't pull out and swerve back or any of that crazy stuff. I think that riding makes me a much better car driver but the opposite is also true. Sometimes when driving I realise how hard to spot some riders are, due to their daft road position as well as lack of lights. BTW..Red at the front, going to white at the back is quite obviously the safest, as well as coolest, colour scheme!! (smiley inserted here..)

BTW A shillelagh makes a very fine seat ......when needed.
